Audience Member Nicolas Winding Refn says in Gambler that he likes crime stories because they are about life and death and therefore the drama is heightened. "Shakespeare didn't write about accountants", he asserts. He then proceeds to feature in a film about financing and budgeting. Ironic. Film accounting is notoriously complicated, and no-one from Refn and his wife to the audience really gets their head around it here. What is interesting is watching a filmmaker admit that he's making a set of sequels for monetary reasons after going bankrupt making a film he was proud of. Props then to Refn for delivering Pusher 2 out of this situation, a sequel that surpasses its predecessor.
