Bill R Plays slower than a snail with a script so weak and tentative that it seems adlibbed. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/23 Full Review Blobbo X Ineptly directed cheapie by Matthau himself. Worth killing a little time to see the woman he married, though, I guess. (Reportedly the same girl who inspired the Holly Golightly character for Truman Capote.) Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/23 Full Review Martin B Mathau was only 10 movies into his career so it's not like he was polished at the point he appeared in this lemon that he directed as well. Terrible acting, terrible script, unconvincing action scenes it's not even good for a B movie. What were they thinking when the guy says he's a bank robber, the librarian doesn't even flinch and offers him a job. Still it's interesting seeing elements of what Mathau would become with his own unique style and delivery. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked this movie. I find the bad reviews extremely shallow. For starters, it's a 1950's movie. That means the acting is a bit naive, down to earth... not terribly slick. Matthau uses a variety of camera angles -- none of the know-it-all critics mention that. As for the story line, I find it uncompromising. Jack is a murderer and nobody tries to make him a hero or a psycho: he just simply kills for money. As a person, he seems quite stupid and unable to evaluate obvious risks. Probably because of his war experience, he has a Ross Perot type of philosophy: just do it. Most of the actors look like non actors. Is that so bad? Reminds me a bit of Bout de Souffle. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review william k Low-budget crime drama, Walter Matthau's only attempt at directing, is quite a lackluster affair with some quite wooden performances - with the exception of his own role. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A corny gangster/caper movie. I enjoyed checking out the old cars more than I enjoyed the movie. Roger Moore Movie Nation The most generic of genre pictures that still has something to dig into, thanks to all it foretold and everything Matthau was just starting to try out as part of his comic persona.
