      Critics Consensus

When the novelty of the CGI Garfield wears off, what's left is a simplistic kiddie movie.

Cedric G I've loved this movie ever since I was a child. I believe this movie should be given a second chance. My opinion? This movie is completely underrated. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Anna R classic kids movie, still would watch to this day. funny and educational! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review matthias s "Garfield: The Movie" brings the iconic lasagna-loving cat to life in a surprisingly delightful way. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the CGI takes center stage, seamlessly blending Garfield into the real world. Despite its age, the humor still lands, making it a fun watch for both kids and adults. As a longtime fan, the nostalgic feels hit me hard, and the incredible soundtrack, packed with hits, only amplified the experience. Bill Murray's casting as Garfield is spot-on; he embodies the sardonic charm of the famous feline effortlessly. While it may not be groundbreaking cinema, it's a perfectly enjoyable family flick, and that's more than enough. Stephen Tobolowsky shines as the villain, adding depth to the story, and as a cat lover, I couldn't help but recognize my own feline's antics mirrored in his performance. "Garfield: The Movie" is a purr-fectly good time for anyone looking for some lighthearted fun. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Anderson O Not as funny as I thought it would be as Bill Murray was casted as the voice of Garfield. By the numbers and by the story beats of what you see in kids movies. The animation of Garfield is clean, the plot still goes dull pretty quickly. This was the early 2000's in comicbook movies through. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Ciaran S Seriously when this came out in theaters was anyone asking for a live-action remake of Garfield? To be fair i don't blame Bill Murray for this it's just that he was given very little to work with, on top of this film having bad writing, bad jokes, bad acting speaking of the latter i'm surprised that most familiar cast i completely forgot were in this film like Jimmy Kimmel, Brad Garrett, Alan Cumming even Nick Cannon of all people. I may not have read all of Garfield comics on a daily basis but i actually enjoyed them, this movie feel like all the charm from the cartoon is sucked out & makes you question why does this movie exist in the first place! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/19/24 Full Review Emma F Rewatching this for the first time as an adult. This movie is phenomenal. They don't make kids movies with jokes for the adults in it like this anymore, and I mean come on. The animation for this old of a movie is impressive. Nell Minow Common Sense Media Cat-astrophic for adults, but kids will love it. Rated: 3/5 Dec 24, 2010 Full Review Dave Calhoun Time Out Without Murray, the film would have much less appeal. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Neil Smith BBC.com The result is not so much catnip as catnap. Rated: 2/5 Aug 7, 2004 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com A nice, safe family film. Rated: 2.5/4.0 Sep 8, 2020 Full Review Kaleem Aftab The List Even Bill Murray, who provides the cantankerous cat's voice, can do little with the material at his disposal and when he bursts into song, Lost in Translation seems like nine lifetimes ago. Rated: 2/5 Apr 22, 2019 Full Review Kevin Carr Fat Guys at the Movies I felt the same misery, despair, offense and nausea while watching this film as I did The Cat in the Hat.
