Critics Consensus

Ghost in the Shell boasts cool visuals and a compelling central performance from Scarlett Johansson, but the end result lacks the magic of the movie's classic source material.

Kambole Campbell One Room With A View Seems the best stuff got lost in translation. Rated: 2/5 Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Angie Han Mashable The characters in this movie just repeat themes and explain plot points to each other, all in the same flat, droning monotone. Jun 2, 2017 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian This is an exciting, fun, futuristic thriller that, like its main character, has a probing mind. It will make you think. Rated: 3/5 Apr 7, 2017 Full Review Keshav Kant OffColour.org Unlike in the anime, this version of the Major is more of a renegade than a leader and cares far more about herself than her teammates. She spends a large chunk of the movie pitying herself. Rated: 2/10 Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Peter Bell Vague Visages Overall, Ghost in the Shell pales in comparison to the 1995 film by lacking a cohesive, well developed plot, substantive themes and a captivating pace. Jun 22, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The presentation has been shaped to Hollywood specifications and robbed of its potential uniqueness, insight, or innovation. Todd B This was a good movie with Scarlett. Thanks for the live action version of this movie. A good add, and take on the role. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Shay W While not being familiar with the source material, I enjoyed it. The style and tech are nicely realised, maybe except for the main character's bodysuit. Now it's no Akira, Battle Angel, but it's good. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Blu B I've never seen the anime this is based off of but I imagine it's superior to this. It's a cool idea we've seen explored tons of times in the genre from Blade Runner, Total Recall, Alita Battle Angel, and many others of varying quality. This really doesn't do anything to stand out. The direction is very basic here. The special effects are honestly excellent in this with lots of practical animitronics and really clean CGI. But the camerawork is basic, the lighting is very dull and clearly is trying to be moody but never really is able to do that. The setting is just another Blade Runner style copy world that we've seen done tons of times. The action scenes are just alright as well. The acting isn't that good either. Everyone has that wooden 00's style of acting. S.J. & her sidekick friend don't really have any special chemistry together and every supporting character is super forgettable including the villian. The pacing isn't good either. This gets very boring at certain parts because of the boring acting, basic direction, lifeless lighting, and nothing special about it to stand out. Everything else is just ok. This isn't incoherent or unfocused and everything follow a logical flow. Besides the basic direction and wooden acting the biggest issue here is the characters in general aren't that interesting and barely explored outside of S.J. We never really get to see her before she becomes an android and never really see her develop any relationships with anyone besides her sidekick friend. It's such a heavy rotating door of supporting casts that is so forgettable I struggle to remember any of them. Also, it does stand out with the main cast being white in a Asian enviorment but this has so many other issues it wouldn't help if Michelle Yeoh was here or any other Asian actress. It's a shame because there are some cool scenes like the creepy animtronics are really disturbing and probably the most original part. That being said, skip this still. I can't see this being any better even if you've seen the anime. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review G P Loved this. She is the best actress. More please. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review Jonathan O This movie has no respect to the anime version and this movie is so white wash and speechless and totally disrespect to anime fans and Japanese people. Is Blade Runner meets Get Out if it was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Radio O An incredible adaptation of the classic anime Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
