Time Out No masterpiece but better than its reputation ... Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Bosley Crowther New York Times The thought that he may yet return for further adventures with his body and Lugosi's sconce fills us with mortal terror. That is the most fearful prospect which the picture manages to convey. Rated: 2/5 Mar 25, 2006 Full Review Paul Chambers Movie Chambers A true waste of time. Rated: 3/4 Sep 3, 2013 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy It gets the job done with admirable efficiency, no excess of imagination, and all in a compact 67-minute frame, and you really wouldn't want it to be any longer than that. Jay W This is the fourth entry in the original Frankenstein timeline. This is the first entry where Boris Karloff is not playing the famous monster. Behind the makeup this time is the Wolfman, Lon Chaney Jr. He does a good job in the role; it is just really noticeable when watching the movies today that he is not the same guy. More importantly, Bela Lugosi returns as Ygor, and he is just as despicable as ever. This time around another Dr. Frankenstein is convinced by the...ghost of Frankenstein, that he can fix the monster if he just gave him a better brain. A solid idea for a sequel idea. After all, following the continuity here, that is the reason the monster acts the way he does. Problem is that the sinister Ygor wants to be the one to get in the monster's powerful body. This movie is still a lot of fun, it just isn't nearly as good as the previous entries. Most of the stuff they handle here, was already covered in the previous entries. The doctor isn't as sympathetic or interesting as the previous doctors. We now know that these plans are doomed to fail. For what it is, it is a really good film. It is mainly the comparisons to the previous films that hold it back. They stand like large pillars that this film is in the shadow of. I suppose even this film can't escape the ghost of Frankenstein. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Blu B It's so forgettable. The cinematography is good. It has some cool shots that recapture the mood of the first and the special effects are really good. Everything else though is pretty mediocre. Lon Cheney isn't bad as the monster but I don't know, he just doesn't have the same prescene Karloff had. It really makes me appreciate how gifted a performer Karloff was. Everyone else is VERY forgettable including the new brother and everyone else. Igor isn't bad but isn't in much of this despite being the biggest plot driver. This is very much plot driven over character driven and by plot driven I mean recycling all the beats weve seen before. The cracks were starting to show with the third but this really isn't able to hide it. There is no character development at all and it's just an excuse to bring the monster back, have him do stuff, and have another group of angry villagers burn the place down at the end again. It's all stuff we've seen before and it's a bit old this time. You know what's gonna happen and there isn't any suspense in this at all. Let alone any fear. The whole planting Igor's brain in the monster is kind of cool but it just feels pointless and a reason to bring the monster back for another go. It makes it all been here, done that with forgettable characters and nothing done as well as the other 3. towards the end despite being the shortest of all 4 films this actually feels over 90 minutes because it just drags the longer it goes on. Skip This. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Andrew L The fourth movie in Universal Studios Frankenstein series is where the studio dropped the ball. With the exceptions of Chaney, Hardwicke, and Lugosi, the rest of the actors are as stiff as The Monster itself. The saving grace of the film is it's ending, unfortunately, in all of the films going forward, The Monster has his original brain instead of Ygor's. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Leigh J I can't believe they made this film, set in Germany, in 1942. They didn't have enough real monsters in Germany in 1942? Not only that, they gas people in this movie. Are you kidding? Watched it tonight because my hubby remembered it from childhood. Once the credits started to roll we both said, "Okay. So we did that." Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review Steve D Not as bad as its reputation but not good. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/08/23 Full Review Logan M The Ghost of Frankenstein is another fun, campy sequel in the dark universe. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
