Critics Consensus

Ghostbusters does an impressive job of standing on its own as a freewheeling, marvelously cast supernatural comedy -- even if it can't help but pale somewhat in comparison with the classic original.

Catherine Scott Bitch Media Ghostbusters is fun, it's silly, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas ABC News (Australia) The new Ghostbusters film is a smart, spectacular addition to the series. Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Soraya Nadia McDonald Andscape Frankly, if you're going to make a new Ghostbusters with a female foursome as the leads and you're facing a backlash from clanging dungeons of the woman-hating internet, it seems like it would make for an epic opportunity to troll them. Sep 26, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson It brings the modern changes and updates that come with making this kind of movie in 2016 and not 1984, which equates to a high level of flashy CGI and blockbuster-level action compared to the saucy and subtle original. Carney Washington Blade Ghostbusters offered a fresh and fun spin on the classic testosterone-fueled comedy and featured Chris Hemsworth as a dim-witted himbo, delightful cameos by cast members from the original movie, and a wonderful breakout performance by Kate McKinnon. Ralf_Wolf the jokes fell flat ... I expected sooo much more from pretty much everyone in this movie unfortunately the writing/directing let us all down and this will be a horrible mark on everyone involved Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/24/21 Full Review trev b Great film so funny change from the normal Ghostbusters which I love they made the film great played so well together Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Sophie L This movie is such a good break from seriousness and stress, it's super funny, the jokes always land. The actresses did a absolute great job portraying the characters, and i loved how they incorporated the old characters. I don't necessarily agree about the "disrespect" to the old franchise, i wasn't that affiliated with it. I feel like this movie was partially butchered due to misogynistic beliefs coming from the fans of the old movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Shay W It is always risky when film makers remake a beloved classic. This is a different take on it. The jokes don't always work, but, Kristin Wigg, Melissa McCarthy and Chris Hemsworth make this version well worth two hours of your time. I will confess I missed Rick Moranis who was my favourite from the original. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review X T This trainwreck presaged and embodies the collapse of Hollywood through deliberately vandalizing and usurping beloved franchises, lazy remakes, gender-swapping, girlbossing, identity politics, alienating and attacking your audience, calling critics all sorts of names, and then crying that the multi-billion-dollar company and the adult pretenders on the screen are being oppressed and victimized by the evil audience, as if they're entitled to our money and our attention. This is where it all began. Ghostbusters 2016 is now everywhere. It's in The Marvels, it's in Echo, it's in The Acolyte, it's in Doctor Who, it's in Star Trek: Discovery. It's everywhere. This is where it started. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review Christopher L Unwatchable :( I really wanted to like it, as the cast is really talented and are all funny people, but it’s really just the terrible script and direction. An all female ghostbusters could be just as great as the best movie (the original), but it’s really the script and director that are to blame here. They should have focused on a radically new and actually funny take on everything, ditched the cameos from the original actors, and given us something we haven’t seen before. The Force Awakens is largely to blame for all these awful rehashes. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review Read all reviews
