Critics Consensus

Ghostbusters does an impressive job of standing on its own as a freewheeling, marvelously cast supernatural comedy -- even if it can't help but pale somewhat in comparison with the classic original.

Catherine Scott Bitch Media Ghostbusters is fun, it's silly, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas ABC News (Australia) The new Ghostbusters film is a smart, spectacular addition to the series. Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Soraya Nadia McDonald Andscape Frankly, if you're going to make a new Ghostbusters with a female foursome as the leads and you're facing a backlash from clanging dungeons of the woman-hating internet, it seems like it would make for an epic opportunity to troll them. Sep 26, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson It brings the modern changes and updates that come with making this kind of movie in 2016 and not 1984, which equates to a high level of flashy CGI and blockbuster-level action compared to the saucy and subtle original. Carney Washington Blade Ghostbusters offered a fresh and fun spin on the classic testosterone-fueled comedy and featured Chris Hemsworth as a dim-witted himbo, delightful cameos by cast members from the original movie, and a wonderful breakout performance by Kate McKinnon. Ralf_Wolf the jokes fell flat ... I expected sooo much more from pretty much everyone in this movie unfortunately the writing/directing let us all down and this will be a horrible mark on everyone involved Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/24/21 Full Review Christopher L Unwatchable :( I really wanted to like it, as the cast is really talented and are all funny people, but it’s really just the terrible script and direction. An all female ghostbusters could be just as great as the best movie (the original), but it’s really the script and director that are to blame here. They should have focused on a radically new and actually funny take on everything, ditched the cameos from the original actors, and given us something we haven’t seen before. The Force Awakens is largely to blame for all these awful rehashes. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review D Jay Cee M The 2016 female-led adaptation of "Ghostbusters" aimed to breathe new life into a beloved franchise but ultimately falls flat, leaving audiences longing for the original’s charm and wit. Despite the promising premise of an all-female team tackling spectral shenanigans, the film fails to deliver on what made the original so iconic: clever humor and memorable characters. From the outset, the movie struggles with pacing and storytelling. The chemistry among the cast, including talented actors like Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon, is palpable; however, this dynamic is squandered by a script laden with uninspired jokes and repetitive gags. The humor often feels forced, relying on overused tropes rather than genuine creativity. Many of the attempts at comedy miss the mark and are often cringe-worthy rather than laugh-out-loud moments. Visually, the film has its merits, with impressive special effects and a vibrant aesthetic that captures the supernatural elements of the Ghostbusters universe. However, stunning visuals can't compensate for weak writing. The film’s plot feels disjointed and lacks the narrative drive that could have made the comedic moments land better. Additionally, while it’s commendable to see a female cast taking on the roles of ghost hunters, the film often leans heavily on stereotypes and predictable character arcs that detract from the overall experience. The characters, rather than feeling fully realized, often come across as caricatures, which makes it hard to connect with them. In an era where reboots and adaptations are rife, "Ghostbusters" hoped to innovate the franchise for a new generation. Unfortunately, it serves more as a reminder of the high standards set by its predecessor. As a viewer, it's disheartening to leave a film with such potential feeling disappointed, and this rendition of "Ghostbusters" is a prime example of how critical writing and humor are to a successful comedy. For fans of the original or those looking for a truly hilarious experience, this film may leave you ghosted. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Michael T The original Ghostbusters is the best movie out of all made before and after this version, but this one is definitely the funniest. I was literally crying with laughter. Chris Hemsworth is hilarious as the dumb receptionist but Kate McKinnon steals the show. Truth be told I avoided the movie for ages because I just thought it was going to be a money making rip off, but I laughed more in the 1st 30-40 minutes than all the others put together. Highly recommended Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Martin J By far the funniest film in the franchise. Actually laughed out loud many times. Especially the hilarious joke about god being drunk. The 80s films were great for the 80s but many of the jokes and gags haven’t aged well. This updates the whole thing and presents us will a brilliant and hilarious cast that really shine in these roles. I hope they make a sequel. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Al L it's unwatchable. what a waste of a decent cast Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews
