When strange apparitions appear in Manhattan, Gilbert and Yates turn to engineer Jillian Holtzmann for help. Also joining the team is Patty Tolan, a lifelong New Yorker who knows the city inside and out. Armed with proton packs and plenty of attitude, the four women prepare for an epic battle as more than 1,000 mischievous ghouls descend on Times Square.

Critics Consensus

Ghostbusters does an impressive job of standing on its own as a freewheeling, marvelously cast supernatural comedy -- even if it can't help but pale somewhat in comparison with the classic original.

Catherine Scott Bitch Media Ghostbusters is fun, it's silly, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas ABC News (Australia) The new Ghostbusters film is a smart, spectacular addition to the series. Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Soraya Nadia McDonald Andscape Frankly, if you're going to make a new Ghostbusters with a female foursome as the leads and you're facing a backlash from clanging dungeons of the woman-hating internet, it seems like it would make for an epic opportunity to troll them. Sep 26, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson It brings the modern changes and updates that come with making this kind of movie in 2016 and not 1984, which equates to a high level of flashy CGI and blockbuster-level action compared to the saucy and subtle original. Carney Washington Blade Ghostbusters offered a fresh and fun spin on the classic testosterone-fueled comedy and featured Chris Hemsworth as a dim-witted himbo, delightful cameos by cast members from the original movie, and a wonderful breakout performance by Kate McKinnon. Ralf_Wolf the jokes fell flat ... I expected sooo much more from pretty much everyone in this movie unfortunately the writing/directing let us all down and this will be a horrible mark on everyone involved Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/24/21 Full Review Nathan C. Why did they shoot a big laser into a hole to save the day? There is a big scary ghost yards away from them but don’t shoot at that! Shoot in a hole… make this a trilogy as a joke! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review C M Fun visuals, ghosts, and cameos, with the light-hearted, almost cartoony horror style of the originals. They got that part right. Also, I have no problem with the gender switch as this was obviously a reimaging, separate from the original which could never be reproduced anyway. For me, the biggest thing keeping this movie from actually being good was Kate McKinnon. Every scene where she was obviously supposed to look cool or deliver a punchline just made me want to punch her. I'm not familiar with her other work, but based on this, her brand of humor seems to rely on acting like a methed up four-year-old. Not only this, but she's obviously the Egon of the group, both the inventor of the team and visually styled with a similar short, light-blonde hairstyle, yet her personality is the exact opposite of Egon's, so it's both jarring and obnoxious. Alas, with a different actress in this role, the foursome's chemistry could have elevated the film to something at least as solid as Ghostbusters 2. I'll also say, the ending could have benefited from the heart of the originals, which showcased the power of comraderie in NYC over the individual butt kicking of the Ghostbusters. As is, the movie is worth a watch, especially for a light-hearted viewing, but it's not something i need to see again. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review Rebecca S Underrated movie in every way. It’s consistently fun and speaks to the audience of all ages by not trying to be identical to the original. Love this and wish they made a second. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/04/25 Full Review Denise Z Super fun. Love the cast and the plot. You can tell everyone had fun making this movie. The best of all GB saga. Would love a second part! 🫶 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/29/25 Full Review Kelly J This is the funniest Ghostbusters. My favorite by far and I love the originals.
