DanTheMan 2 Bursting onto the screen with all the subtlety of a stars and stripes coloured sledgehammer, G.I. Joe: The Movie offers plenty of amusing, infectious machismo from the film's heroic protagonists. Vying against other '80s movies for the most testosterone-filled characters imaginable, at its heart, the film is good-natured and humorous with colourful, likeable heroes to cheer and villains to boo and hiss at. It's been almost twenty years since I've seen anything related to the original series, but I've had an itch I've been eager to scratch for some time now; despite this not holding quite the same special place in my heart as The Transformers: The Movie does, there's still plenty of witty one liners, extravagant moments of logic defying action and incredible animation to marvel at. The cartoon always allowed some measure of goofiness in a somewhat realistic style, but this film shifted the series to a more fantasy-focused tone, featuring battles on a larger scale than the TV episodes could have ever imagined. Even if the whole coma bit is truly laughable, a prime example of executive meddling, the film more than makes up for it with a fantastic soundtrack and stellar voice cast that even features the likes of Don Johnson, still riding the Miami Vice popularity wave, and even Burgess Meredith, all of whom are just having a ball with their roles. In many ways, G.I. Joe: The Movie could have served as the perfect end to the original series had the creative team's plans come to fruition as intended, pushing out the old to make way for the new, although as it stands, it still remains a perfect encapsulation of the timeless cheese of 80s cartoons. The only problem: Falcon is introduced a little later than a protagonist should be.
