      Critics Consensus

Its infectious enthusiasm for its subjects - and Iggy Pop's ingratiating presence - more than make up for the effortlessly entertaining Gimme Danger's relative lack of context or depth.

Gareth v Fantastic doco on one of music's most seminal bands. Jarmusch lets the music and Iggy's fine ability to tell a story do all the work too great effect. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review Georgios M Jarmusch's approach is fundamentally hagiographical and the result is an extended Iggy Pop interview of little artistic or historical interest. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/11/23 Full Review Chris A Obviously Jim Jarmusch is a fan. Great story telling. Amazing footage. I was hooked. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Such a cool and weird Michigan vibe in this -- I grew up in the same area just after these times and so some of the stories are very familiar. Highly recommended! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A Stooges doc is quite overdue, and uber-fan Jim Jarmusch took it on…better late than never. Iggy is such a cool dude and it's always enjoyable to see interviews with him. I have two questions…why did they interview him in a laundry room? Why did they interview James Williamson in what looked like the bathroom of a medical facility? This was definitely a doc for the fans, and it skipped over a couple of chunks of time, which made for some confusion, but I guess they had to reign it in somehow to make it not 6 hours long, and the answer was skipping over the majority of Iggy's solo career…it's a Stooges doc, not an Iggy one, right? I had to look up how the Asheton brothers died, and it feels like those details are part of a band's story..or did I miss it? There was some great old footage of the band, which is always nice to see, but also unnecessary random stock footage that I didn't need to see. Personal nitpicking aside, I thought it was fun to watch and captured the spirit of the band and Iggy, and watching Mike Watt play with them and the smile on his face was so joyous. Overall, this was fun to watch, and there are absolutely interesting stories told. It's shame that the Asheton brothers aren't still around, but it's VERY nice that they lived long enough to reunite. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Terrific and terrifying. Iggy stands up to all conventions and literally bleeds for his art. Well done and never boring. Judy Berman Pitchfork ... by getting Iggy to talk about his art rather than his antics, Jarmusch performs the delicate feat of elucidating a beloved rock'n'roll persona without exploding it. Sep 21, 2017 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian Iggy is the star of the show. He comes across, still lean and long-haired and handsome (and almost fully clothed), as intelligent, caring -- and still vexed by what he sees as the corporate corruption of rock 'n' roll in the 70s. Rated: 3/5 Jan 6, 2017 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times Without breaking many rules, Gimme Danger honours these admirable rule-breakers. Rated: 4/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review Victoria Luxford City AM A slightly corny ending takes some of the shine off the rebellious message, but Gimme Danger is nonetheless a solid tribute to true outsiders. Rated: 4/5 Feb 18, 2022 Full Review Matt Wilkinson NME (New Musical Express) A loving tribute to one of America's most influential bands... Rated: 3/5 Apr 23, 2021 Full Review David Bax Battleship Pretension It's a letdown that a singular director like Jarmusch has produced such a conventional film. In its totality, though, it's still better than most movies of its kind because he never forgets to foreground the unique individuality of his subjects... Jan 4, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
