Susan Stark Detroit Free Press Calling Girlfriends a promising directorial debut only seems to damn it and its maker with faint praise. It is promising in the same sense that Francis Coppola's 1968 The Rain People and Steven Spielberg's 1974 Sugarland Express were promising. May 18, 2023 Full Review Eleanor Ringel Cater Atlanta Journal-Constitution Girlfriends is a film whose parts are bigger than its whole, an imperfect film that succeeds almost in spite of itself. May 18, 2023 Full Review Martha DuBose Sydney Morning Herald Girlfriends is a unique experience: a wry and unflinching presentation of contemporary women facing up to universal conflicts and, for better or worse, making their own decisions. May 18, 2023 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) This is a heroic film, realized with much devotion and little presumptions. [Full review in Spanish] Jan 18, 2024 Full Review Dustin Chang Floating World There is no wrong or right choice. There is only her choice. Independence is the key word in Girlfriends. Then there is sisterhood. Jan 9, 2024 Full Review Catherine Chapin Charlotte Observer The story is an old one... But the theme underlying Girlfriends is much more absorbing: the quality and the element of luck in friendship. May 18, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Alec B Hugely influential both in how it utilizes a low budget and the narrative. Outside of that it remains a universally appealing and relevant story about the subtle and major shifts of life in your 20s. Outside of that it remains a universally appealing and relevant story about the subtle and major shifts of life in your 20s. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I love the depth and diversity of moments in this film. Nothing is clean cut or black and white, nothing is really resolved. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review dave j After best friends of Susan and Ann live together for many years, Ann makes a decision to finally move out of there apartment to live with her fiancé and eventual husband, Susan would then have to adapt and revaluate her lifestyle all over again. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Even at 86 min. it feels too long, but a good movie definitely worth seeing. Great time capsule-y portrayal of NYC as a twenty-something in the late 70's. Very blatantly an influence on Lena Dunham's stuff, but lightyears more palatable. And awesome to see Christopher Guest and Bob Balaban so young! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member The pretty much perfect film is a minor-classic that deserves more recognition. I've read where Stanley Kubrick called it something like the best American made film he had ever seen. Pretty high praise and ever bit of worthy. See this film and spread the word.
