Critics Consensus

Free of visual or narrative embellishments, Gloria Bell rests almost completely on Julianne Moore's performance in the title role -- and she's gloriously up to the task.

Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) [Julianne Moore] is always terrific, but she gives an especially terrific, well-rounded performance here. It's nuanced, vulnerable, strong, funny, emotionally rich and textured. Sep 20, 2019 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review A well-observed, good character study, although something that you may have seen before. Jun 17, 2019 Full Review Adam White Independent (UK) Gloria Bell is somewhat exhausting - both unbearably intimate and at a constant remove - but it is endlessly pulled back into focus by Moore. Rated: 4/5 Jun 11, 2019 Full Review Ryan McQuade InSession Film Gloria Bell deserved much more happiness behind the camera and on the page to make this something truly worth dancing for. Rated: C- Apr 4, 2024 Full Review Paul Kanieski KSQD Community Radio Gloria Bell succeeds as an empathetic look at middle age with all of its accompanying trials, not least of which is the challenge of finding a worthy partner whose baggage doesn’t outweigh our own. Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Julianne Moore has the kind of talent and charm that makes you forget Gloria Bell is a remake. Kyle M Even without the original’s momentary accessibility, Julianne Moore expectedly shines, as well John Turturro in problematic gravitas form, in the self-made, visually-translated remake seemingly geared radiative capture than fleshing the story with captivated engagement – unless the thematic lengths are based towards an empathetically reflective demographic. (B) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Sharon D Anyone who manages to slog through a movie as boring and emotionless as this could at least be rewarded with a happy ending, but alas no. The music and blurred cinematography further detract from the experience. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Efrem M Good performances, ok casting, abysmal script. Could have been much better. It just needed a completely different approach and a better structured script. It was obviously going for a “Lost in translation” kind of vibe but didn’t get anywhere close. Not even remotely. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Andrew H Julianne Moore gave an unparalleled performance that was the heart and soul of the movie. I was left wondering if this was because of the director or the actress, or both? In any case, purely outstanding work. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review KB B It started out really interesting but the last quarter and ending was just mediocre. Watch if there's nothing else on. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Georgan G Gloria is working on having a life despite dysfunctional relationships with her ex & a new relationship is only legally divorced. Julianne Moore carries the movie, but supporting actors also shine. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
