Audience Member no i never watched this movie. i was trying to rate something else :p Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Surprisingly pedestrian cavalry western from an early Sam Peckinpah script, which he actually wrote nearly ten years earlier. The film's story is cliched rag tag group of recruits who are whipped into fighting shape and then go out on a mission. The mission in this case is essentially Little Big Horn, but the story is sooooo all the "Sands of Iwo Jima" training are so familiar that the film is just dull. There's also a very uninvolving romantic subplot as well. Blandly directed by journeyman director Arnold Laven, there is no way anyone would watch this film and foresee the brilliance that Sam Peckinpah would bring to his later films. Instead of watching this film, viewers should watch the cavalry western Peckinpah directed himself, which came out around this same time, "Major Dundee," which is a far more unique of western and even in it's non-director approved state has many Peckinpah hallmarks and themes that make it well worth watching. But back to "The Glory Guys," James Wong Howe did the photography on this film, which helps liven things up some and Riz Ortolani did the music, though it's far from one of his better scores. James Caan, Slim Pickens, Andrew Duggan and Wayne Rogers all star in the film. Overall, it's not a terrible film, but it's pretty disappointing considering it's from a Peckinpah script. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A decent cavalry western which is the story of Custer's Last Stand with the names and dates changed. The film does have an interesting array of characters all of which have their own part to play within the film. In regards of action in terms of large battles there is only one, at the end. However there is always something going on whether it is training or a saloon brawl. The final battle scene is very well done. It is very well filmed and is a decent battle scene. The negative aspect of the film is the love triangle which takes up a large part of the film. There is no point to this part of the story; it plays no part in the main storyline at all. The only function it has is to introduce two of the characters to each other. As acting goes Tom Tryon is well cast as the cavalry captain he has the stature and manner about him to fill the role. Harve Presnell is average in his role as the cavalry scout, he does not really stand out. James Caan is perfectly cast as the happy-go-lucky Irish recruit who provides some comedy. Overall a very enjoyable western which has good characters and has good action scenes. The romantic sub-plot however is pointless and unfortunately takes up a large part of the film. The film on the most part is well cast and well acted. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Kind of like its straightforward, macho and funny heroes this is an entertaining watch highlighted by a pacey Peckinpah script. The Ortolani score, terrific character work by Pickens and Caan, and an excellent climax shot(!) by James Wong Howe put it several notches above what might otherwise be typical horse opera fare.
