With the release of Breathless in 1960, he established himself overnight as a cinematic rebel and symbol for the era's progressive and anti-war youth. Sixty-two years and 140 films later, Godard is among the most renowned artists of all time, taught in every film school yet still shrouded in mystery. One of the founders of the French New Wave, political agitator, revolutionary misanthrope, film theorist and critic, the list of his descriptors goes on and on. Godard Cinema offers an opportunity for film lovers to look back at his career and the subjects and themes that obsessed him, while paying tribute to the ineffable essence of the most revered French director of all time. Brian C A 100-minute flyover of the massive work of one of cinema's most important, challenging, and prolific filmmakers. And for once, Godard's history isn't reduced to a handful of his most recognized films of the early/mid 60s, but to the entire scope of his work. A great introduction to Godard for anyone who wants to know why his name is still spoken in reverence, with many behind-the-scenes films of the director on set and interviews with those who worked with him. At this length, only a surface skim can be made but it should intrigue viewers to find out more. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Ben Kenigsberg New York Times It refuses to reduce Godard’s output to the relatively accessible French New Wave period and tries to deal with him in all his thorniness. Dec 14, 2023 Full Review Ryne Clos Spectrum Culture While there are a few visual flourishes, the documentary is far too straightforward to portray the life of film’s greatest iconoclast. Dec 21, 2023 Full Review Wade Major FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I get why Godard is important, but it still got on my nerves. Dec 19, 2023 Full Review Andy Klein FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A really good scan of his career, which you could do 12 hours about. Dec 19, 2023 Full Review Daniel Gorman In Review Online Godard Cinema obfuscates as much as it elucidates, perfunctorily skimming over world-historic events in a rush to get to the next milestone. One can imagine an entirely different documentary made up exclusively out of what this one leaves out. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Avi Offer NYC Movie Guru An illuminating, well-edited and warts-and-all documentary biopic. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
