Roger Moore Movie Nation A "Cracker Gothic" book whose time passed and a movie that had no prayer of having its moment, much less outlasting it. Rated: 2/4 Dec 31, 2021 Full Review Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine As Ty Ty, the head of the clan, Robert Ryan gives the best performance of his career. Jan 29, 2020 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid As a huge fan of director Anthony Mann, I'm always eager to check out anything he did, but God's Little Acre is something of an oddball curiosity on his resume. Mark M Pretty awful film. Not as bad as the novel, though. After suffering through the book I was curious to check this film out. I do not recommend! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/22 Full Review kevin w There are two movies here, two movies presented for the audience's approval at the very same time: one is Erskine Caldwell's rambling and inconsistent "big Southern novel", meant to impress with one family's struggles standing in for all of society, social concern heavy Iike fatback grease dripping in the underpinnings, yet given a light touch to make it all palatable, relatable. Unfortunately that effort never fully materalizes, leaving the dull taste of confused disappointment. But the other movie! It's as if the actors had no clue about the cheesiness of the script---and, like Rocky Balboa, came to the party regardless of the other film to absolutely own, to absolutely win. The finest performances up and down the cast, bar none, a marvel to watch, all of them on high octane nitro fuel. It's spectacular. And, it's a bit of a curiousity. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member robert ryan has one of his best roles here and it's entertaining in a debauched southern gothic way but it's way too long Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member pretty lame i guess was 'steamy' then but not anymore! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Strange comedy/drama about a man greedy for gold. It has some salacious scenes for its time, including Ginger from Gilligan's Island looking gorgeous and teasing men while she takes a bath outside (really now!). The only time I've ever heard a guy wail and cry "I lost my albino!". Yeah, weird. Also, a badass black man who talks like Boomhauer on King of the Hill who says "Just cuz I'm black don't mean I can sing minstrel tunes!". LOL. (Take into consideration the date, 1958). Good one to catch on TCM sometime if you're into the oldies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Very good adaption of Erskine Caldwell's book (who wrote the screenplay too) deals with the poor in the south during the 1930s both in the fields and in the factories, deals with how both poverty and greed can divide a family - actually? deals with quite a bit and the story does become somewhat fragmented at times, however, overall this film from 1958 that stars quite a few TV stars of the 1960s is a worthwhile watch. "..boys you don't understand. It's not about how many dollars you can get from God's little acre; but that you can stand on it, walk on it and feel God IN it." ~ Erskine Calwell Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
