What to Know

Critics Consensus

With just enough human drama to anchor the sweeping spectacle of giant monsters smashing everything in sight, Gareth Edwards' Godzilla satisfyingly restores the franchise's fire-breathing glory.

David Sims AV Club Every time Edwards' Godzilla rears up, you stiffen with excitement. Every time he roars, Edwards wants you to feel it and wince. Sep 22, 2016 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire 'Godzilla' doesn't feel cynical; there's a sense of joy to the picture, of honest-to-God fun, which separates it from many of its summer movie brethren. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Richard Lawson Vanity Fair This isn't a thinking man's Godzilla, exactly, but it's certainly clever where it counts. Jan 5, 2015 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Amazingly, “Godzilla,” while actually having a trainwreck in it (two in fact), is not a complete trainwreck itself. Rated: 3/5 Oct 14, 2024 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film Godzilla isn’t a perfect film by any means, but it takes aspects of what we know about Godzilla and pieced it together in a way that felt real, intense and big. Alysha S 4.2. The story is great and the action and music are tremendous. Unless I'm missing something obvious, I don't know why it's not liked more. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Stephen L Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla (2014) takes a measured, atmospheric approach to the iconic kaiju, delivering a visually stunning blockbuster that values tension and scale over non-stop destruction. The film’s greatest strength lies in its ability to make Godzilla feel truly massive—each appearance is carefully built up, emphasizing his weight and presence with breathtaking cinematography and immersive sound design. However, the film’s biggest gamble is its restraint. While the slow-burn approach works in creating anticipation, it also sidelines Godzilla for large portions of the runtime. The human characters, led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen, serve more as placeholders than compelling protagonists, making certain stretches feel less engaging. That said, when the film finally unleashes its monster spectacle, the payoff is undeniably satisfying, with a climactic battle that delivers pure cinematic awe. Despite some pacing missteps, Godzilla (2014) succeeds as a visually rich, well-crafted reintroduction to the legendary creature. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Justin T There was too much shaky camera and watching in 3D doesn’t add anything except some of the kaiju shots later in the movie. This is a high quality production but Godzilla only shows up half-way through and it feels like a very long film as it’s over 2 hours but still not as long as the previous American Godzilla film. The effects are really excellent with great destruction when it happens, but it’s so infrequent and only shown briefly. It’s a shame that they start fighting or start destroying then cut away to people skydiving or wandering through rubble almost immediately missing all the kaiju action. I get that they wanted to show it from the human’s perspective and that’s why they cut away from the best of the monster action but if they were committed to that approach then why so many high angles? These kaiju look so much better from low angles, it gives them more scale. At least most of it was set at night where the kaiju look better. The characters are dull except Bryan Cranston but he’s barely in the film. It’s mostly entertaining but not fun. I think it would have been good if there was way more city smashing and monster fighting. What we did get was good though. Visually it’s a hell of a lot better than Godzilla (1998) but actually less enjoyable overall. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Travis B moutos bad humans bad only 1 action scene but good story 2 good characters and they arord of seeing the final fight make it a decent movie at best Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review James & Bronwyn C This was a great movie with a decent story, but I do have some problems with it. First of all, they literally show the Mutos more than Godzilla, which is kind of weird considering the title of the movie. Then, when Godzilla and the Mutos were having this really awesome fight, the movie cuts to some boring human drama. And they also killed off Brian Cranston and replaced him with his really quite boring son. But the end fight of the movie really is spectacular, and the visual effects are stunning. Definetly worth a watch, despite all the issues with it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review Audience Member The opening credits are just... someone had way to much fun. The typography with the montage of historical clips sets the perfect tone. The concept lent itself to some striking cinematography, but the film missed out on a lot of those opportunities. The shining moment for visuals was the base jumping with the red smoke flares, the iconic shot from the posters. I wanted more of that. Not actually a lot of focus on Godzilla himself, there was no character development for anyone except the husband and wife trying to get back to each other, which is something. The scientist roles were flat and dry as cardboard. Watanabe just stared wide eyed at everything the whole film, which he's good at haha, but I needed more with that. This would have been a great opportunity to really establish Monarch as an organization, and the development of the org in Kong: Skull Island would hit much harder. But it's overlooked in the script. Taylor-Johnson carries the whole film, and might have a bit too much screentime. This is GODZILLA after all... but he's cool. The destruction felt overwhelming without more of a focus on Godzilla. It leans almost toward... some sort of documentary news horror without a strong story... There was more focus for the Motus. They were well designed and formidable enemies for Godzilla. The film just spends too much time leading up to the Godzilla reveal. The whole first act with Cranston though... man, that was good. The father son conflict added a perfect layer of depth to the story, but it ends prematurely with the father's death. Not a great story choice. The son also doesn't even mention it but once the whole rest of the film. His only purpose was to get Ford to Japan, but they should have killed him off with the mother in the first sequence. After watching Kong: Skull Island, I had high expectations. Interestingly, Godzilla was the first film, followed by Kong, but chronologically Kong happens first, so that’s the film I started with.
