Audience Member The Caribbean Star, a combination cargo ship and floating casino is hijacked by terrorists led by Luis Carreras (John Vernon), who installs an atomic bomb, holding both the passengers and the bomb hostage, hoping to exchange them for the gold bullion on a U.S. Treasury ship. However, First Officer John Carter (Richard Harris), Susan Beresford (Ann Turkel), and Dr. Marston (Gordon Jackson) join forces to foil the plan... After the European release, a six-minute prologue was shot to make the plot more explicable. The movie performed poorly at the box office. The Guardian called the film "nothing but dross". "Golden Rendezvous" is a poor Richard Harris actioneer based on the 1962 novel "The Golden Rendezvous" by Alistair MacLean. The plot is wobbly, the editing wobbly and the structure wobbly. It looks bad as well and the abrupt ending clarifies that the production was not really a good one. The ensemble cast with David Janssen, Burgess Meredith etc are unfortunately wasted. Director Ashley Lazarus can´t seem to get anything together. I was very disappointed as I had been looking forward too see this for a long time. The film went $1.5 million over budget and this was blamed on Richard Harris who, it was alleged, held up production with his drinking and rewriting of the script. Producer Euan Lloyd later discovered this was not entirely true – however, it made it difficult for Lloyd to cast Harris in his next film, The Wild Geese. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Disappointing suspense film has terrorists seizing a luxury liner with ample mysterious passengers for a daring takeover of a US Treasury ship carrying gold. Based on Alistair McLean novel with a decent cast. Film may be more dubiously remembered for a South African political scandal surrounding it involving corrupt use of government funds directed to the production company. Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …the acting, action, music and the entire production are verging on criminal…offers hackneyed heroism and inappropriate jauntiness in the face of terrorism, making it a classic re-watch for those who love bad movies… Rated: 2/5 Jan 9, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews
