      What to know

      Critics Consensus

The first and best Pierce Brosnan Bond film, GoldenEye brings the series into a more modern context, and the result is a 007 entry that's high-tech, action-packed, and urbane. Read critic reviews

It's hard to separate this film from my nostalgia, it's also a bit hard to separate it from my memory of the Nintendo 64 game which holds its own barrel of nostalgia. That being said, watching it in 2022, the film is certainly dated, but still fun. Bond's misogyny comes off a bit more cringy than it once did, but the spy stuff is still goofy fun. The Brosnan movies were always the goofiest of the Bond films I found, embracing the tech and wackiness with a certain glee, and as a kid watching these films I liked that. Honestly, I still like that. Goldeneye is probably the most grounded of the Brosnan films, and it still involves a giant space laser. Whatever, the film is fun. Maybe a bit too long, but fun.

Keeping an Eye on the Double-Oh tropes that kept Bond so endearing for over 30 years, Pierce Brosnan's debut relishes a Golden opportunity to roll the charisma of Connery, the suaveness of Moore, and the cheekiness of both into one jolly good high-tech adventure. Updating the superspy for the '90s but keeping him rascally, GoldenEye remains Brosnan's best Bond outing and one of the series' best overall. The film earns extra points for marking Judi Dench's first foray as M, beginning the tenure of one of the series best and most inspired casting choices. In this PG-13-rated spy thriller, James Bond (Brosnan) teams up with the lone survivor (Izabella Scorupco) of a destroyed Russian research center to stop the hijacking of a nuclear space weapon by a fellow agent (Bean) formerly believed to be dead. Stylish and silly in one fell swoop, the film succeeds based chiefly on the winning choice of lead but the action-packed story packs a punch all of its own. Making 006 the villain makes for some ace intrigue. The casting of Bean, however, is an intriguing notion all of its own. It takes a strong actor such as this to play off of Brosnan, who makes the part his own by ironically not throwing out previous Bonds with the bath water. Firing on all cylinders with this, his very fun debut outing, it's a pity that the follow-ups lower themselves to becoming so formulaic. Still, the opening scene that finds Bong bungee-cording off of a ridiculously high dam takes a hold on your interest that rarely lets go save for a semi-climatic finale that doesn't come close to matching the gleeful thrills that result from the pre-credits sequence. Bottom line: Remington Zeal

"Goldeneye" is a great action movie. This movie has a great plot, amazing acting and incredible action scenes. Another thing that makes this movie so great is the villain. In my opinion he is one of the best bond villains. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes action-packed "Bond Movies". I give "Goldeneye" a 9/10.

If the Timothy Dalton films weren't convincing enough, the tongue and cheek tone is seemingly gone from the franchise, and that's probably for the best. But GoldenEye suffers at times because of it's lack of fun at all. Pierce Brosnan finally gets his chance at playing 007 after two separate close encounters previously. This was also the longest gap in between Bond films, 1989-1995, to date. GoldenEye attempts to modernize and boost the stakes to the series after two very serious films with Dalton. Brosnan brings charm but surprisingly not a ton of charisma, or at least not compared to Connery or Moore. But then again, not many do. We also have performances from Famke Janssen, Sean Bean, and the newcomer to the series Judi Dench. Out of everyone, Dench is by far the most notable in that she's the first 'M' to really put Bond in his place. She's the only 'M' that I actually believed was his boss. You can't pull one over on the dame herself. But although I like Janssen in most roles, I was kind of annoyed by her for most of the film. She didn't seem to fit in with the tone of the rest of the film so therefore not a very good villain. Her killing technique is one of the strangest things I have ever seen. It's a shame because the potential was all there. Sean Bean on the otherhand, is always fun to watch. His turn from being 006 and Bond's friend to the leader of a nuclear space weapon seemed both original and familiar. I liked that a villain came from somewhere personal to Bond, but I also feel like it could have had more build up within their friendship instead of hiding him for half the film. That way, the gut punch will hurt more if we would have cared about these two working together. Plus, how many times have we seen a nuclear motivated villain in this series anyway? I also don't believe the 9 year time jump was in any way necessary. Considering that both of these two are MI6 agents, I would have liked more than a few minutes of hand to hand combat. This film is beloved by many people, but I hardly believe it's one of the best Bond films. It's action is marvelous though so unrealistic at times i.e. the spectacular pre-credits sequence. The acting with exception of Janssen is very good. There's just a few too many mishaps with the pacing and lack of interesting female characters (with the exception of Dench of course) among other things. it's a formidable spy film, it's just nothing special, especially among the greatness of this franchise. +Dench brings needed gravitas +Bean is so fun to watch +Personal villain +Action -Janssen is out of place -Story never takes the next step into greatness -Some unbelievable moments 6.1/10
