      Critics Consensus

Writer-star Iliza Shlesinger finds some laughs in real-life romantic travails, but Good on Paper makes an overall awkward transition from stand-up to screen.

Robin B It's cute, funny, very on-brand comedy for Iliza. I couldn't believe that it was based on a true story that she actually went through...Crazy. I found it an easy watch, would watch again, and plan to recommend it to friends. I hope she writes more movies/TV, because I will be watching! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/04/23 Full Review Emma B Watched the whole thing but not a good movie. Bad acting and not funny- very obvious what will happen next Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/21/23 Full Review Eric R It felt like this movie didn't know what it wanted to be: Comedy, drama or thriller. Not only could it not figure itself out, I couldn't figure it out either. It wasn't really funny, and it wasn't thrilling or scary. Ultimately, the plot has fallen to the same fate as it's title, it was good on paper, but really didn't turn out that well. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/02/23 Full Review Fleces P What did I just watch? A mash up of some BS romcom with an episode of Seinfeld? Whatever this was trying to be, it turned out to be a really annoying bicker fest with an ending thats begging for a lawsuit. Not very well written, acted, or pretty much anything. Do yourself a favor and watch a few episodes of Seinfeld instead. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/22/22 Full Review steve d It may have looked good on paper, but in execution the film was excoriatingly unfunny. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Eric W Was this suppose to be a comedy? It was creepy, honestly. They could come out with a sequel about how Dennis is a serial killer. David Fear Rolling Stone As an "anti-rom-com," hijacking the genre's rhythms without adhering to the rules of the game, Good on Paper is fine. As a satire of showbiz vapidity, it's decent. It's not nearly as subversive as you want it to be. Rated: 3/5 Aug 2, 2021 Full Review Ed Potton Times (UK) Shlesinger makes an engaging lead, charismatic and thought-provoking if not often laugh-out-loud funny. Rated: 3/5 Jun 28, 2021 Full Review Carla Renata RogerEbert.com Iliza Schlesinger takes a familiar premise and spins it with stand-up comedy reminding girls sometimes what is good on paper is a hot buttered mess waiting to be exposed Jun 26, 2021 Full Review Jillian Chilingerian Offscreen With Jillian Nothing about the film feels natural or believable. Aug 22, 2023 Full Review Rebecca Johnson Film Focus Online Good on Paper has its funny moments with some decent stand-up comedy, but overall is a pretty dumb and convoluted watch that believes itself to be wittier than it is. Rated: 2/5 Aug 6, 2023 Full Review Carlos Ovalle But Why Tho? A Geek Community Despite an undercooked third act and some long stretches of unfunny riffs, Good on Paper finds a way to keep you engaged throughout the film’s 90-minute runtime.
