Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal The problems stem from ragged storytelling, a surfeit of silly epigrams and a jangle of accents and cultures that leaves you wondering where Mr. Nolte's strangulated crook fits in. Apr 4, 2018 Full Review Barbara Ellen Times (UK) The Good Thief is worth seeing, if only for Nolte's turn as the loveable de-toxing rogue. Jan 3, 2018 Full Review Derek Adams Time Out While Jordan's repeated freeze-frames try a little too hard for nonchalance, the overall cocktail of Gallic insouciance and American film noir grit delivers such relaxant properties you forgive a few foibles. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Sean Axmaker Seanax.com A faithful remake, a spirited updating, and a deft, colorful, thoroughly entertaining heist film swimming in character and atmosphere, Neil Jordan's The Good Thief (2002)... may not be his best film, but it is one of his most purely enjoyable. S R A huge letdown from the original. The whole thing seemed rushed and contrived. It's a shame because it could have been much better. RUS. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Audience Member Slightly better than ‘Confidence’ but not by much Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Personally, I enjoyed the film. It had a decent story line, nice cinematography, an occasional partially clad pretty lady, a decent setup of a crime & a twist with an enjoyable ending (which these days is unusual for Hollywood writers, producers, studio execs (& many with low processing brain waves). Michael Clements aka Budman Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/15/21 Full Review Audience Member Horribly written, horrible acting. Everything in this "movie" if you want to call it that - is predictable from the Beginning to end. I wouldn't see this movie if they paid me. Worst case for me is Liam Neeson is the same actor in every movie - including this worthless movie. his character in this movie from every word in the script, the way he conducts himself, the way he speaks just EVERYTHING is ANOTHER taken movie, he only knows how to be one character / the role he played in taken - unfortunately he is not a true actor and cannot get out of that character that's why this movie and all others is taken REGARDLESS of what the movie is Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Boring from start to finish! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member We're both lost souls. An older thief and his band of misfits is planning a robbery in Monte Carlo. He lays the ground work, sets the plan, and goes in for the execution...when it becomes obvious the police know his plan. The thief will have to rally the troops, move on to plan B, and find out how the police found his plan out. "He doesn't want money. He wants what money can buy." "What can money buy?" "Beauty." "You're being mysterious now?" "Beauty is always mysterious." Neil Jordan, director of The Crying Game, End of an Affair, Michael Collins, Breakfast on Pluto, Byzantium, The Brave One, The Miracle, and The Butcher Boys, delivers The Good Thief. The storyline for this picture is just okay with mediocre characters but an above average script. The acting fits the characters well but isn't special. The cast includes Nick Nolte, Tcheky Karyo, Said Taghmaoui, and Emir Kusturica. "You protect the honor of widows and orphans..." I came across this on Netflix and decided to give it a viewing since it was created by the director of The Crying Game. This was just okay, slightly worth following, and doesn't separate itself in the genre. I would only see this if nothing better is available.
