Critics Consensus

A family affair both on screen and behind the camera, Kate Winslet's directorial debut stacks the deck for tears a little too lopsidedly, but honest performances help put this drama's heart firmly in the right place.

"Goodbye June” is far from a catastrophe, but it’s perhaps a greater sin that the film would be far more interesting if it were. Go to Full Review

It’s a story open to the syrupy and the sentimental, and it can’t quite escape the formulaic, despite an overqualified supporting cast...giving their all to the reconciliation dynamic underpinning the plot. Go to Full Review

Goodbye June has some fine qualities, but it's flat when it should be compelling. Go to Full Review

Written by Kate Winslet’s son, Joe Anders, and inspired by his grandmother’s passing, this family drama sails along on goodwill and excellent performances Go to Full Review

This one is meant to jerk tears, but if I were going to shed any tears, they would be for a cast that deserved better material. No hard feelings, though. These accomplished actors surely will triumph anew. Go to Full Review

It's not immensely dramatic, and to Winslet's credit, she doesn't yank at the heartstrings so much as gently tug at them. The film is lovely and mostly restrained, anchored by a particularly fine performance from Helen Mirren. Go to Full Review

Dec 23 Great acting, Helen Mirren at her best. Kate winslet also. Great story line and brought tears to my eyes. See more Dec 14 It’s a tear jerk for sure but I sobbed and laughed from beginning to end! Great story, great cast (Helen, Kate and Toni) and perfect flow and timing! I put it in my holiday movie category faves including Home For The Holidays and The Family Stone. I am excited to see what else Kate and her son have to collaborate on together. See more Stacey C @FilmGeek85 13h Kate Winslet’s directing debut and the script was written by her son. There is an absolute stellar cast but unfortunately their talents were not enough to save this film. Overly sentimental, absolutely chockablock with stereotypes that feel a little lazy and predictable. It all just felt a little contrived and too hard. It just misses the mark for me. Connor’s character felt believable and Winslet’s restrained performance stood out above the others but unfortunately not even the amazing cast can save this one. See more Roz D @Rozzid89 1d I thought this was a beautiful film. Stunning acting, and a realistic look into dying, grief, family relationships and love. I highly recommend. See more Debra M 1d I was blown by this film. As a hospice nurse I really appreciated those feelings at the end of life and acting was amazing. Can’t actually understand how anyone can criticise it as I felt was absolutely spot on with all the emotions and family dynamics See more Tanette L @Trouble420 2d A beautifully sad story of a typical family going through a tough time. It really hit home for me. Tears are inevitable. See more Read all reviews
