      Critics Consensus

Goon is a crude slapstick comedy with well-formed characters and a surprising amount of heart.

cbcguy Great sports comedy, real funny and the payoff for the final fight was worth the buildup. Was refreshing to see Sean William Scott not playing a Stifler type role, even though his comedic performances are always great. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/24 Full Review Roy V " my stomach light needs your stomach light. We can all phone home together." Hahahahahahaha!!!!!!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/29/23 Full Review Tom W Loved it. I don't care if the language was overdone, I'm not offended, it was just so repetitious. No matter. The parents were cardboard cutouts, but they served their purpose. The violence was fine. I'm watching the blood spill knowing it isn't real, so I could just laugh & cheer. When the piper played "Scotland the Brave" before one game, I was reminded how perfectly the character of Doug Glatt (Scott) represented the spirit of the old Highland warriors who, in early times, used to charge into battle running at their foes buck naked & yelling at the top of their lungs. The romance between Eva (Alison Pill) & Doug was heartwarming, if little unconventional. I enjoyed the way friendship or at least respect developed among the team members, the coach, the fans & the foul-mouthed Pat, played by Jay Baruchel. I enjoyed this movie. It was fun to watch. Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture As the brutality ramps up, and the story gains real consequence, for some reason, we actually laugh harder. Goon is a comedy, often a very funny one, but you might be hesitant to call it that once you've actually seen it. Jan 8, 2013 Full Review A.A. Dowd Time Out Chicago A disarmingly sweet descendant of the blood-on-the-ice classic Slap Shot. Rated: 4/5 Jan 8, 2013 Full Review Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle Exuberantly off-color, bloody, and frequently laugh-'til-you-choke hilarious. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 27, 2012 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review What stays with you is how lovably awkward and warm-hearted Scott manages to be in this role. Rated: 3/4 Dec 4, 2022 Full Review Ed Travis Hollywood Jesus Utimately, Goon succeeds even within the comfortable criteria set forth by dozens of sports films that have come before it. Mar 31, 2020 Full Review David Harris Spectrum Culture Scott tries his best with the material but he has been abandoned by his team on this one. Rated: 2/5 Nov 8, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
