GORBACHEV. HEAVEN finds acclaimed director Vitaly Mansky (UNDER THE SUN) at home with a man who helped to shape the 20th-century: Mikhail Gorbachev. The Soviet leader was acclaimed as the architect of Glasnost and Perestroika, policies that gave the citizens of the Soviet Union--what Ronald Reagan called "the Evil Empire"--a chance to be free. He even tore down the Berlin Wall. But at the same time, under his rule, the Chernobyl nuclear facility exploded and its destruction was concealed. Citizens demanding independence in the Baltic states died. Soldiers wielding shovels brutally suppressed protesters in Tbilisi. Soviet tanks killed peaceful demonstrators in Baku. Under Gorbachev, the Soviet empire collapsed. He is now condemned by his own people. This intimate portrait finds Gorbachev living alone in an empty house outside Moscow, still carrying the burdens of his past.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Excellent, excellent film... Most interesting of course is that we are watching how Mikhail Gorbachev is reacting to Vladimir Putin. Nov 5, 2021 Full Review Stephen Dalton Hollywood Reporter A poetic portrait of a poignant political afterlife. Dec 19, 2020 Full Review Guy Lodge Variety More poetic character study than exacting political profile. Nov 21, 2020 Full Review Charles Solomon FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I got very impatient with this film. It is interesting to hear Gorbachev talk... [But] he really doesn't say very much. Nov 5, 2021 Full Review Christopher Llewellyn Reed Hammer to Nail Maybe it's just a sad elegy to a lost cause. Whatever one might think of it, Gorbachev. Heaven is a testament to survival, however lonely.
