Ken Jaworowski New York Times A serviceable biopic centering on Gregorio del Pilar, who fought United States forces during the Philippine-American War. Sep 20, 2018 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse The battles and the production values save an imbalanced film that will probably appeal to fans of epic war movies, but the comparison with its predecessor definitely leaves this one on the losing side. Del Pilar is portrayed as a heroic, righteous figure who's admired by almost everyone, especially attractive single women. R C Some scenes could have been cut, even with the good performances. For me, 2 hr 27 min movie is too long, even in the epic war movie genre. For those who don't the history of the Philippines-American war, it may feel slow and it takes a while to get to the battle with the Americanos. I recommend viewers to research the history and biography of Goyo to get a better understanding of the relationships and plot. I applaud the effort and it's worth a watch simply because it's hard to find quality epic war movies set in the Philippines. The first film Heneral Luna was more concise and enrapturing so watch that one first! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Ph should keep on making movies like these. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Paul O A story in search of a plot. You get the sense that if you don't know the actual history, or maybe saw a prequel, you have no way of knowing what is going on. The only background you are given on Goyo is that he seduced and then dumped a whole lot of women. He carries a leather satchel filled with their heartbroken letters --- everywhere. Beyond that there is a lot of infighting amongst Filipino troops, for no obvious reason. A little torture and bad dreams, some racism by Filipino troops against Filipino mountain tribesman, and then a final battle scene. In that final battle, whatever remains of the Filipino army (who has been deserting or been getting killed by other Filipinos,) fights a pretty lame shootout with the U.S. Marines. (The USMC is played by a bunch of mostly old fat guys the casting director must have found in a local tourist hotel.) I was looking forward to seeing a movie about a topic rarely covered in the US. Instead I saw a boring soap opera with no understandable plot lines. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review anton celdon r In a stylish and striking Biopic, Del Pilar is portrayed as a imperfect hero, weighted down by the restraints of his flaws. Though it foes not capture the tension with a weak and uneven potrayal on both sides of the war, together with its stunning visuals, compelling dialogue, and timely themes, Goyo: The Boy General soars. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Too long, too much characters and too boring for me to care. It felt flat in a series of a scenes that should have been heroic or emotional. The film could have been accomplished in less than two hours but of course the filmmakers felt the need to inject people from the previous films and characters that obviously are going to star in the next installment. As a result, the film felt like one of those boring history books that students are forced to read in high school. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Audience Member interesting part of history most people dont learn too much about some acting is good, some acting could be better good color grading pacing can be slow at times dialogue wasnt very strong, had to rely on music to covey emotions only worth the watch if you want to learn about filipino-american history Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews
