Meike S This film is very hard to come by, it's not on any streaming service or to be bought on DVD or blue ray. The whole story is rather silly and over the top - however, once you have accepted the whole fantasy, over the top Russian Court setting with people adressing each other as little father, darling - drinking absurd amounts of vodka - and so on, it starts to become oddly funny. Peter O'Toole makes a dashing but prudish English captain, Jeanne Moreau as the empress is divine as usual, and you can sense the chemistry between the two (although it really seems totally unrealistic why he keeps running away from this insanely attractive woman). It's already worthwile watching just because they are so handsome in period costume. I suppose at the time people expected more than just froth from this film due to its stellar cast and were disappointed, but for fans of Ms Moreau and Mr O'Toole, this is definitely entertaining.
