      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Great Muppet Caper is overplotted and uneven, but the appealing presence of Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang ensure that this heist flick is always breezily watchable.

Jacob B Guess I'm pissing off all you Muppet fans for the unspeakable crime of...preferring this film over The Muppet Movie which I thought was fine but a teeny bit overrated. What can I say? I did really like The Great Muppet Caper with its fun songs, really good visual effects that help sell the illusion that these sentient puppets are individuals in their own right, amusing plot and finally, being really funny. The fact that Jim Henson directed this time around might have had something to do with it. Shame that this would end up being his only Muppet movie before he passed away a decade later. I still think the 2011 film is the best Muppet film but, presumably because it wasn't hyped up as a work of art by the fans, I found myself enjoying their second big-screen adventure much more than their original story from 1979. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review Steve D Only for the biggest fans. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/11/23 Full Review Jackson S This movie is about the famous puppet twins Fozzie and Kermit doing a funny adventure. It is when the Muppets went into more funny things instead of heartfelt. I also think the only heartfelt movies are The Original Muppet Movie and The Muppets Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review christopher c. m This is my favorite Muppet Movie. The story, the music, the cameos and human characters are all great. Charles Grodin makes a great villain. No spoilers, it's not a mystery as they show his face during the opening song right before he robs his sister. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Carlos I Easily my favorite Muppet movie. I grew up watching this one the most. For me there is nothing quite as entertaining as Gonzo throwing himself onto oncoming traffic to hail a cab. I also love how much of a love letter it is to Hollywood. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/26/22 Full Review isla s This is a fun, family friendly Muppet film set in London. Its quite entertaining, with a number of musical numbers and the usual range of zany characters. It's pretty much what you'd expect of a The Muppets film - madcap in nature and pretty entertaining. The plot doesn't entirely make sense but that doesn't matter too much as there's plenty of fast paced scenes and action to keep the viewer watching...this is a relatively decent film of its type, likely to entertain most kids I'd have though, yes. Alexander Walker London Evening Standard I am always amazed at how the Muppets blend into the human world. Never has this been better done. May 3, 2023 Full Review Eric Shorter Daily Telegraph (UK) There are characters which have sprung to mythical life on the box because their creators are an artistic team to compare with the original Walt Disney's. May 3, 2023 Full Review Tim Pulleine Guardian More traditional family fare is served up by The Great Muppet Caper, which -- though it is somewhat thinly spread over 96 minutes -- contrives, to tolerably engaging effect, to involve the garishly cuddlesome creatures in a farcical live-action anecdote. May 3, 2023 Full Review Scott Sublett Washington Blade The sophisticated, ironic overtones do not interfere with a child’s enjoyment of the film. The two levels enrich each other by fusing into a complex vision that is satisfying to an intelligent person be he or she young or old. May 20, 2022 Full Review Stephen Silver Tilt Magazine While there's a lot to love in the movie, that approach kind of puts the characters at a remove and doesn't deliver the type of emotional payoffs that came in the other movies. (40th anniversary) Rated: 3/5 Jul 16, 2021 Full Review Peter Sobczynski The Spool Instead of a story that took advantage of the richly drawn characters we'd come to know and love over, it gives us a knockabout farce that ... feels more like a lesser Bob Hope vehicle.
