alan f My first thought was this would be an eat the audience movie, not unlike Jaws. I was surprised and very pleased to find that not to be the case. It was much more a take on unintended consequences of good intentions, (watch the movie to understand). The economic and cultural effects on the Cape are also very interesting and discouraging. It is also nice to hear the Cape locals are a thoughtful and articulate populace. Beautiful cinematography as well Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Meagan D Great White Summer is an intellectual take on the shark documentary genre, offering far more than the usual adrenaline-fueled fare we’ve come to expect during Shark Week. What it lacks in shocking jump scares or sensational headlines, it more than compensates for with its compelling, thoughtful storytelling and stunning cinematography and score that beautifully capture the timeless charm of a New England summer. From the opening scenes, the documentary skillfully builds tension, not through blood or teeth, but by juxtaposing two distinct groups within the Cape Cod community—ocean lovers with diverging perspectives on how to engage with the very waters that define their lives. On one side, we see those who fear the great white shark’s intrusion on sports, leisure, and the ecosystem, and on the other, those who celebrate this presence as a reminder of nature’s untamable force. In this delicate balance, the film poses a profound question: should we approach the ocean with fear or admiration? At its surface, Great White Summer is a story about sharks and how humans adapt to the reappearance of this ancient predator. Yet, to reduce the documentary to merely a shark tale would overlook the deeper message the filmmakers so masterfully convey. This is a film that delves into the essence of the human condition, exploring how we face the unknown and the ways in which fear, awe, and respect shape our worldviews. By the film’s end, I found myself reflecting on my own biases in approaching others and the unfamiliar. The creators deliver a well-researched and balanced narrative, presenting both sides of the shark debate without losing sight of the humanity at its core. This unbiased, compassionate storytelling is a welcome departure from the usual media cycle that thrives on stoking division for sport. I left Great White Summer feeling hopeful—about community, about coexistence, and with a renewed appreciation for the passion, fear, and joy that guide us all in navigating our world. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Marcia E Beautifully filmed. A balanced presentation of the many viewpoints held by the interested parties- local residents, science researchers, and government. A must see if you want to be informed on the topic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review John L I knew about the subject of this film and some of the people involved. I thought it would be informative and interesting. I didn't think it would be absolutely riveting, and it was indeed all that. It was as good a documentary as I have ever seen. The story line was cogent and compelling, the cinematography and music were stunning, and the individuals on both sides of the issue were portrayed so accurately and compassionately. It was incredibly well balanced and thoughtful. If all of our urgent public issues were presented with this level of depth and insight, we would have far better political discourse. Kudos to the director, the producer, and all the wonderful Cape Codders who made this film second to none! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Matthew K The cinematography is spectacular and transports the viewer into the middle of a high stakes environmental debate. Both sides are presented in a balanced way and with so many unanswered questions - I'm hoping for a part 2! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Pola E Very well made and interesting documentary. It's a complicated issue and the film did a great job showing the different viewpoints while also being interesting and entertaining. Def not going swimming on Cape Cod anytime soon.
