Critics Consensus

Greed rarely hits quite as hard as it ought to, but solid laughs and a smartly assembled cast keep this one-percent satire entertaining.

Cath Clarke The Big Issue Greed would feel a bit underdeveloped, were it not for a gear shift in the final 30 minutes as Winterbottom embarks on thoughtful exposé of the human cost of fast fashion. Nov 13, 2021 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News "Greed" seems unsure of whether it's meant to be a comedy, a parody or a satire, and winds up whiffing on all three accounts. Rated: C- Mar 7, 2020 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times I wasn't exaggerating about the relentless, lecturing tone of the film... Rated: 2/4 Mar 6, 2020 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Coogan’s gleaming, toothy white bite in Greed has some searing wit, and a bruising browbeating leaves its mark. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 27, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Somehow, despite the films heavy themes, Winterbottom, Coogan, and the generous supporting cast make the material amusing and entertaining at the same time. Rated: 3/4 Feb 21, 2022 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia A comedy from Winterbottom that brings together, like coins, some of the essential qualities that make a good satire, although the mixture never seems to shine enough to complete the transaction. Walter K Extremely dry and depressing Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/18/20 Full Review Robert W I go to the movies to be entertained, not listen to political social agendas. Waste of time and money. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/12/20 Full Review Terence G. L Possibly THE WORST movie I have seen THIS YEAR. IN THE LAST DECADE. and/or IN MY LIFE!! The premise, the actors and the previews led me to pick this movie in my weekly pilgrimage to the Movies downtown. However, upon viewing, I began to see this as a 'reality documentary' much like the young couple in the movie, only with less authenticity. I truly felt sorry for the principals who were thrust into this movie with direction much like the 'Colosseum' being built on set. It was a deep dark retribution for me to have stuck around long enough to see Steve Coogan get his 'Just Deserts" for allowing himself to get dragged in (and out) of this dirge of a film....and I HATE giving negative reviews!! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/08/20 Full Review john c It was a sobering comment on how we buy clothing and inequities. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/07/20 Full Review Test T I watched this on DVD recently. I thought it started well, and at first it was quite amusing as Steve Coogan developed Sir Richard's back story for the audience. If this promising tone had been maintained throughout the remainder of the film I would have rated it more highly as an enjoyable satirical comedy. However, the film strives for much more, and adopts an almost documentry style attempting to make serious social commentary about the darker side of retail fashion. Sadly, this is nowhere near as entertaining to watch, and as a viewer I felt somewhat ambushed. It's not a bad film, and in fairness it does raise some uncomfortable realities for the audience to take away and consider. I would therefore recommend it, but not as the comedy I thought I was signing up to watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/12/24 Full Review Gary O Sometimes a director writes a terrible script. But who's gonna tell them, or stop them? Also this film suffers from poor casting. But I'm sure it was fun to make. Nice views anyway. Sadly, a missed opportunity for a better, funnier film.
