Tom Keogh Seattle Times Though lacking narrative focus, it offers rich impressions of a New York City artistic community that profoundly influenced American popular culture. Rated: 2/4 May 30, 2013 Full Review Rick Groen Globe and Mail Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation behaves altogether too much like the generation that got defined - yep, its starts out energetic and fresh only to age into tedious self-importance. Rated: 3/5 May 2, 2013 Full Review David Noh Film Journal International Its blandly generic title is all too disappointingly germane to this loving but far from incisive documentary covering a vital time in music history. Audience Member not the best ever, but worth a look see, thanks to netflix...a bit self congratulatory but filled with nice footage and decent interviews, narrated by Susan Sarrandon...a subject worthy of a doc, albeit maybe a little trite or passe...but still worthy of putting on and abosrbing Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Not particularly well-made; self-congratulatory. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member For those of us who lived through the era isolated in Cracker South it is a nostalgic tour too short to be significant. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A solid doc on the Greenwich Village scene, and village itself, from the late 40s through to the early 60s, and the culture that sprung up around it. Interviews with many relevant figures (Dylan being the exception, but then again, he's such a big figure, that might have skewed the doc away from the point). However, they do have Pete Seeger, Kris Kristofferson, Peter (from Peter, Paul and Mary), Judy Collins, Carly Simon, Arlo Guthrie, Buffy St-Marie, and others. It's definitely relevant, and there's some genuinely great musical clips we get to see, and a feel for what special kind of scene it was. Not quite as gripping as some music docs, but interesting enough to keep you watching. Worth a watch if you're into Singer-Songwriters or Folk at all. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member The number of artists they interviewed was tremendous. Told the story from the musicians' point of view. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Sadly not that good. Had such potential. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
