What to Know

Critics Consensus

Gremlins 2 trades the spiky thrills of its predecessor for looney satire, yielding a succession of sporadically clever gags that add some flavor to a recycled plot.

Dave Kehr Chicago Tribune 'Gremlins 2'' is sloppy and inconsistent, just as it needs to be -- its bumptious, adolescent humor would wilt away if it were subjected to craftsmanship and mature reflection. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 23, 2020 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times What lends it novelty and makes it such wicked fun is the change of locale from a Capra-esque small town to rude, hectic New York City. Jun 23, 2020 Full Review Nigel Andrews Financial Times Gremlins 2 The New Batch has so much comic energy that we overlook its lack of anything worth calling a plot. Jun 23, 2020 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Not only is it better than the first... it is the best film of the summer. [Full review in Spanish] Nov 11, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The story is essentially a duplication of the original film. Rated: 5/10 Sep 14, 2020 Full Review Tim Brayton Alternate Ending Many filmmakers throughout the years have tried to figure out how to make a live-action cartoon; Joe Dante, with this film, is the only man that got it 100% right. Ads T Gremlins was a B-movie cult classic when it was released in 1984. It had humour that wasn’t forced and brilliantly staged scares. Gremlins 2 ignores all this and goes for total parody. Does it work? Well, it’s entertaining, horror veteran Christopher Lee is memorable as a genetics doctor but beyond that, it’s only a rung above a Weekend at Bernie’s sequel in necessity. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/18/25 Full Review Kevin P A very funny, wildly creative, and batshit crazy satire of the original franchise’s immense popularity and all the bloated conglomerate media madness surrounding it. There are so many creative and crazy gremlin designs to the point of parody, including the Brainy Gremlin, the electric gremlin, the vegetable gremlin, the “beautiful” gremlin, the gargoyle gremlin, and the spider gremlin. It’s insanely stupid that’s pumped up to 11 and it takes complete advantage of all the crazy limits of this premise for one hell of a wild ride. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Shaun R Chaos and carnage and that’s how Gremlins should be. Just introduced it to my 11 year old and she loved it as much as I did when I was her age. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Audience Member I watched it and it gave me nightmares. You know why?! THIS MOVIE IS REALLY AWFUL!!! Why does this movie exist? I can't tell, because the movie sucked. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review No N This is a strong contender for the worst movie I've ever seen. Stupid gag after stupid gag after stupid gag. Appeared to be written by five-year-old boys for five-year-old boys, while not being appropriate for children. I enjoyed the original Gremlins film. This one was just incredibly stupid and annoying with virtually no redeeming qualities. I'm surprised so many actors agreed to be a part of it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Ethan G Unapologetically violent and silly, "Gremlins 2" adds an unexpectedly creative and funny layer to a premise that could have easily lost its footing.
