What to Know

Critics Consensus

Gremlins 2 trades the spiky thrills of its predecessor for looney satire, yielding a succession of sporadically clever gags that add some flavor to a recycled plot.

Dave Kehr Chicago Tribune 'Gremlins 2'' is sloppy and inconsistent, just as it needs to be -- its bumptious, adolescent humor would wilt away if it were subjected to craftsmanship and mature reflection. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 23, 2020 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times What lends it novelty and makes it such wicked fun is the change of locale from a Capra-esque small town to rude, hectic New York City. Jun 23, 2020 Full Review Nigel Andrews Financial Times Gremlins 2 The New Batch has so much comic energy that we overlook its lack of anything worth calling a plot. Jun 23, 2020 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Not only is it better than the first... it is the best film of the summer. [Full review in Spanish] Nov 11, 2022 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The story is essentially a duplication of the original film. Rated: 5/10 Sep 14, 2020 Full Review Tim Brayton Alternate Ending Many filmmakers throughout the years have tried to figure out how to make a live-action cartoon; Joe Dante, with this film, is the only man that got it 100% right. Nim T I watched the previous Gremlins many years ago and I liked the originality of the humor at that time. Many years later, I had the opportunity to watch the sequel. The story felt overall weak because it was about the Gremlins multiplying again related to factors that one would only knew if they had watched the first movie. The story lacked a center because previously there was some more time of presenting Gizmo and the main cast of Billy and Kate in the first, but for this movie, there wasn't emphasis of Gizmo. The chemistry between Billy and Kate felt a little lacking because they were more separate when trying to destroy the Gremlins. The film still deserves an average rating because the humor and the gory bits still maintained the elements that could be understood for audiences that did not watch the first film. If there would be a third film, I would be open to watch it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/31/25 Full Review Michael D L An awesome sequel that is definitely worth a watch Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/23/25 Full Review Nick O Better than the original! More gags! More slime! More gremlins! More Dick Miller…all adds up to more FUN! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/22/25 Full Review Gordo L Gremlins 3 is coming I watched all the grimlins movies this is a good movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Ivan W Such fun!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review Ads T Gremlins was a B-movie cult classic when it was released in 1984. It had humour that wasn’t forced and brilliantly staged scares. Gremlins 2 ignores all this and goes for total parody. Does it work? Well, it’s entertaining, horror veteran Christopher Lee is memorable as a genetics doctor but beyond that, it’s only a rung above a Weekend at Bernie’s sequel in necessity.
