      Critics Consensus

Greyhound's characters aren't as robust as its action sequences, but this fast-paced World War II thriller benefits from its efficiently economical approach.

David S Loved it. “ Action pack” as my Chinese girlfriend used to say. Hanks is awesome and made me feel the suspense. Can’t ask for more. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review David d It's a different kind of war movie... different in the sense that nearly all of the movie plays on the Greyhound destroyer, with Tom Hanks in the middle. It's difficult for me as a non-sailor, as will be the case for many viewers, to judge the portrayal of the various roles on board ship, but it comes across as a very experienced team of sailors doing their jobs to the best of their ability, with a few human quirks and conflicts. And it keeps you focused as a viewer. As regards the acting; I already noticed some years ago that Tom Hanks is getting too old - and looking it - to play these roles. Yet, in this movie he comes across quite believeable. Except that the writers goofed up a bit starting him off as a Lt.Commander at already old age, then promoted to Commander and escort leader. It seems unlikely to me that anyone who stays in a low rank so long would get that kind of responsibility. Why not start him off as Commander, promoted to Captain for the escort duty ? I have not read the book by C.S. Lewis, but it could not have been a problem to make some changes for the sake of the lead actor's age - it never is in movieland. As regards the screenplay; some sequences are definitely out of the real war playbook, as should be: the wolfpack breaking up the screen of the convoy. A daring submarine going in so close to the destroyers that they cannot use their guns, as they do not travel downwards far enough - while the German machine gunners can spray their enemy from below (I miss that Hanks would then quickly deploy some hands with hand-held machine guns or rifles to take out the Germans - it is what I would have done, don't have to be a Naval buff to think it up). Two submarines simultaneously attacking one destroyer with torpedos from different directions. Most of the time it feels like the protecting destroyers are chasing their tail, having to be reactive to the U-boat attacks and not pro-active, except later on in the movie. The movie leaves me wondering about several points that I intend to read up on, like a) why did the USA not send aircraft carriers with large convoys to provide air protection ? Considering the thousands of lives on just one troop transport, the hundreds of pieces of equipment, tons of ammunition etc, it seems well worth it... b) is screening a convoy not like a suicide mission for destroyers and corvets ? When torpedoes are fired, they best get out of the way quickly - but then the transports will be hit... c) why not (instead) pro-actively attacking the U-boats with all available forces as soon as you had them on sonar ? In short, it does give one to think about... also, I never knew that Catalinas were used as submarine hunters... In the end Hanks get compliments from the impressed English escort leader for 'a job well done' - while we have seen numerous transport ships sunk in the hour before.. makes you really wonder what was considered acceptable or average losses at the time.... all in all, a movie that sets you thinking. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Charley S Not often you find an interesting Naval film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Nick C It's a WW2 war film, that delivers out of the gate. The fact that it's only 1:30 minutes running time, and it didn't give the chance for character development in such a short time doesn't hinder this film from delivering, action and suspense and a great performance by Hanks and it's cast. You like WW2 war movies, you'll like this one. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Stacey L Fantastic film. Wonderfully written and directed, and as usual Tom Hanks performance was fantastic. I so appreciate the effort the Mr. Hanks has put into telling stories based on history that is too important for the world to forget. I only wish I could purchase this on physical media to add to my collection. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Robert Daniels Consequence With little character development on paper, the narrative finds victory through Hanks' patient physical performance and the craftsmanship within the battles. Rated: B- Feb 12, 2021 Full Review Robbie Collin Daily Telegraph (UK) If this is all Tom Hanks imagines a Tom Hanks vehicle to be, he greatly underestimates himself. Rated: 2/5 Nov 22, 2020 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian Greyhound is the lead ship and Krause is the overall commander. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 28, 2020 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews Tom Hanks is fantastic as the protagonist, but his screenplay is far from truly being one. All dialogues revolve around characters (mostly Hanks') calling naval instructions for most of the runtime and looking either through a window or binoculars. Rated: C Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Peter Bell Vague Visages Greyhound’s inability to venture further into the depths of wartime psychology leaves it susceptible to being forgotten just as quickly as it emerged.
