Richard Brody New Yorker Distills a vast swath of history and experience in the travails of one striving man. May 5, 2014 Full Review Ben Sachs Chicago Reader [An] uplifting underdog story, complete with dance numbers and a sweet romantic subplot. Oct 11, 2013 Full Review Tim Grierson Paste Magazine Even if the plotting is a trifle trite, that doesn't mean that Haroun can't find ways to surprise. Rated: 6.3/10 May 31, 2013 Full Review Michael J. Casey Boulder Weekly Nothing about Grigris is cliché, inauthentic or boring. Jun 22, 2019 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie The cinematography by Antoine Héberlé is gorgeous, lending a vibrant quality to the film's locations, and Haroun has a knack for boiling stories down to their essential qualities that would make other filmmakers jealous. Rated: 6.5/10 Jun 21, 2019 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews In a crowd-pleasing way plays out as an uplifting story of an underdog overcoming his rotten fate. Audience Member A few good crippled dance scenes are all this low-key movie has going for it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member If life is like a dance, this dramatic film has an enigmatic choreography. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member The film opens with the title character, Grigris, as he steps out onto a dance floor to entertain a paying crowd - we watch his unbelievably skinny but agile body as it bends and contorts and our eyes are drawn to his one virtually fleshless leg as he spins it around like a broken stick. Its a dazzling introduction to the character and the film - one that intrigues you and brings questions to the audience's mind about who this man is and what his world is like. But while the set up of the film is strong, almost immediately it loses its energy and originality. What follows is a mundane story about Grigris' struggle to earn money for to pay his father-figure's medical bills (a relationship we're meant to be believe is strong though we never get to witness it) and his falling in love with a prostitute - it could so easily have been elevated to greater intensity and simmered to subtler poignancy but somehow never manages to get there.
