Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter [Pegi Vail's] documentary about the effects of global tourism... should be mandatory viewing for anyone who's ever thumbed through a Lonely Planet guidebook with an eye toward visiting an exotic destination. Sep 18, 2014 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times This well-meaning but superficial film skips across the globe, raising some provocative arguments but advancing few. Sep 3, 2014 Full Review Diana Clarke Village Voice Vail's film earnestly interrogates authenticity even as her camera lingers on a beach without footprints, inviting the viewer to walk. Sep 2, 2014 Full Review Glenn Sumi NOW Toronto Despite the trend toward what one clever subject calls backpackaging, the cleverly edited and beautifully shot film ends on a hopeful note with the emergence of sustainable models in places like Bhutan. Rated: 5/5 Jun 28, 2019 Full Review Cynthia Fuchs PopMatters While the film includes numerous images showing plastic detritus and tire tracks, it also offers several testimonies by travelers relating specific experiences. Rated: 6/10 Sep 18, 2014 Full Review Eric Monder Film Journal International It isn't perfect and could have been much tougher-minded - especially about the country's "selling" of tourism - but this film should start a necessary and overdue conversation. Audience Member The "Gringo Trails" film by Pegi Vail is a forward-thinking film that presents diverse viewpoints on major global issues affecting geographic locations, their populations, and their quality of life. More specifically, this film's content accurately explores the negative effects of tourism on Haad Rin Beach in Thailand. This was influential because it revealed how the lack of regulation over this beach lead to carless behavior amongst travelers- particularly the people drinking there. Gringo Trails is well constructed because it addresses the issue, and in turn, highlights upon potential room for growth. The location that was once sacred to the locals became inauthentic and trashed. This film focuses on the importance of controlled tourism, which offers a solution to limiting the harmful effects of travelers on the area. The idea that tourism can be manifested into producing a positive outcome offers a viewpoint that everyone should acknowledge. It is never too late to improve a place. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member The film Gringo Trails by Pegi Vail offers an interesting and accurate viewpoint regarding mass tourism and its effects on the destination. The film was well edited and used audio accompaniment that complements the video clips used in this documentary, e.g. when tourists were brushing their teeth, the music started out with shakers that made a 'brushing' noise; or when the tourists were shown fishing, the music featured a plucked string ensemble. Gringo Trails is not just an informative and credible documentary but is also a captivating and entertaining movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member With the film Gringo Trails, documentarian Pegi Vail delves into the complex issues and problems that arise where mass tourism is present. The goal of the film is to educate people on the dangers of unregulated mass tourism and how sustainable tourism is beneficial to both the locals and tourists. The movie uses examples from across the globe such as Thailand, the Bolivian Amazon, and Bhutan and personal stories from globetrotters to show the failures and successes of tourism and also how tourists themselves think when arriving in a different place. Vail followed all types people in her film and painted a vivid picture of how tourism changes a destination. While I thoroughly enjoyed Vail's documentary, I felt that she should have devoted more time to the coverage of sustainable tourism. That topic alone is fascinating and I would have liked to learn more about that subject. The film's main focus is to educate the public as well as promote sustainable tourism. The film shows specific examples from places like the Bolivian amazon. Hopefully this film can open the eyes of many tourists and promote safe, sustainable tourism. This film seeks to determine whether or not tourism is destroying our planet or changing it for the better. The movie brings viewers on an awe-inspiring journey through Latin America from Bolivia, all the way to the beautiful beaches of Thailand and beyond, to demonstrate how these once beautiful destinations have since become destroyed due to overpopulation and pollution. Through the life changing stories from travelers such as Yossi, to the native locals, this film seeks to change viewers perspectives on traveling and how to make wiser decisions. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who is seeking to expand their knowledge on the tourism industry and to gain a better understanding on how tourism and travel significantly impacts specific cultures and countries and its' people. This film effectively shows the devastating change the Bolivia Amazon went through due to tourist polluting and ruining it. It shows the change in the Amazon over the years of increasing tourism and the negative results they are left with.
