Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Chicago connections are many for the Bill Murray classic that’s funny, poignant and way better than sweet vermouth on the rocks, with a twist. Feb 4, 2023 Full Review Peter Stack San Francisco Chronicle This delightful romantic comedy, directed by Harold Ramis, is rich in fantasy and unexpectedly funny twists. Rated: 4/4 Jan 11, 2023 Full Review Joe Holleman St. Louis Post-Dispatch Groundhog Day is a charming and hilarious film. Or did I already say that? Anyway, it is worth repeating. Dec 21, 2022 Full Review Douglas Davidson Elements of Madness As home releases and re-releases start to fall into a bit of an endless cycle, it makes a weird bit of sense that Groundhog Day would lack a certain excitement and feel like more of what we’ve seen, yet still bring about a little bit of joy. Jan 20, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Nothing suggested that this would gather steam over time and emerge as one of the most respected comedies of the past 30 years. Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 14, 2023 Full Review Marylynn Uricchio Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Groundhog Day is a Scrooge-like comedy that's surprisingly delightful. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Simeng C Movie Review for Groundhog Day Groundhog Day (1993) was a romcom film with a bit fantasy setting. It is the pioneer of film with time-loop settings. When I first watched this movie, I always thought of another movie called Happy Death Day (2017). In Groundhog Day, a conceited and mean weatherman named Phil is stuck in a town that keeps getting stuck on February 2nd. In the Happy Death Day, a college student Tree repeatedly reliving her birthday of her murder by a masked killer. Although these two films both have plot of time loop and both portray the protagonist's growth after experiencing the time loop, they are totally different in topic. I like to watch the parts where Phil realizes he can use time loops to do whatever he wants. The tone of that movie scene is very lighthearted. It's the kind of day that almost everyone has fantasized about: doing anything without consequence. Because the consequences will not be cumulative, so he can do anything immoral but enjoyable. In this process, he tried to hit on many women, and successfully achieved the goal because he would ask in advance what those women liked. Phil enjoyed his life by using the power of “prophet”. However, he did not show his true self to these women. He is keeping use the way satisfying the desires of others to satisfy his own desires. He plays the role of a considerate man in exchange for others' goodwill in order to achieve his own desires, such as sex. Until he wants to hit on Rita. Rita is like a "counterfeit detector," able to screen out Phil's insincerity and reject it outright. Rita is a highly idealized person, she is very energetic and optimistic. In the reality, I have never met anyone who lives as naturally and sincerely as that, nor anyone who is never lonely or discouraged. Since I really like this character, it is an almost perfect person. So much so that I selfishly feel that Phil is not worthy of her. But overall, I found the movie to be very profound. Most people probably lead similar lives every day: go to work, eat, sleep. So sometimes we feel like life is just a simple repetition. The movie is like a parable addressing this issue. Phil at first feel so bored about this lives. But in the end, he explored a lot of things around him and began to change. So, I highly recommend this movie to anyone feeling bored or weary of monotonous, repetitive days. You might find it deeply inspiring.
