      Critics Consensus

Grumpy Old Men's stars are better than the material they're given -- but their comedic chemistry is so strong that whenever they share the screen, it hardly matters.

a_cold_soul 9 Great movie from my childhood. I still continue to watch this movie well into my 30s. I wish they were still with us Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Brad K A classic comedy with real humor. Always has been a enjoyable movie better than we get anymore Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Sarah D One of my all time favorite feel-good movies. Whenever I want to feel uplifted, I go straight to this movie. Funny and heartfelt. Warms you like a hot cup of Ovaltine! 😊 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/26/23 Full Review Michelle H My favorite comedy of all time. I love both 1 & 2 and have watched and rewatched for so many times, through out the years. Reminds me of people and a time that I treasure. A close 2nd is my big fat Greek wedding. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/01/23 Full Review Michael W This comedy classic was really good. Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Ann-Margret, Burgess Meredith, Daryl Hannah, Kevin Pollak, and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job in this movie. The story of the movie was entertaining, dramatic, and humorous. It's about a rivalry that's been going on for years and what it means to be a friend. If you haven't seen this classic movie yet, check it out sometime. It's a definite must see. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/12/23 Full Review red t A Classic Comedy Romance. Matthau & Lemmon carry this film to a significantly higher level than it should. Without them and their phenomenal chemistry and witty delivery of the humor this would more than likely be a forgettable/hit or miss 90's Rom-Com. The cinematography is solid along with a solid music score as well. The editing & pacing is very well done also. This is a well written and witty story about never letting age stop you from being a better person and helping make those around you happier. Age is just an excuse at the end of the day. Very surprised at the level of character development across the board as well. The only faults I have with this honestly is some elements are predictable and while everything is very well done I wouldn't say it is flawless. 1/3 of the humor really hits, 1/3 makes me chuckle and the other third just kind of falls flat. Surprised at the dark humor at times in this. Honestly anyone that's a fan of any of the actors in this or a Rom-Com fan will love this. The Outtakes are THE BEST PART stay for all of it. Simon Rose Empire Magazine Watching Matthau and Lemmon in this vehicle is sometimes hard to stomach after knowing that they are worthy of so much more. Rated: 2/5 Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Michael Wilmington Chicago Tribune They're two saints of sarcasm. And they work their magic here with only the flimsiest sitcom structure to support them. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Adam Mars-Jones Independent (UK) In their prime, the by-play of these two (Lemmon and Matthau) was like an entertainingly bad marriage, but time has made their antagonism seem perfunctory, and the rapport that underlies it somehow smug. Nov 15, 2017 Full Review Rob Lowing The Sun-Herald (Australia) This is formula comedy all the way but somehow the skimpy plot and rehashed situations prove amusing in a leisurely not irritating way. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 28, 2024 Full Review Cory Woodroof 615 Film Oh, to have been a senior citizen at the height of the Grumpy Old Men films. What dreams may come. Jan 15, 2023 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Few movies of this increasingly burgeoning genre have reached the same heights, today’s efforts increasingly sanitised, formularised and joyless. Everything Grumpy Old Men is most certainly not. Apr 4, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
