Abhishek Srivastava The Times of India ‘Gunner’ embodies everything that makes a film so bad, it's almost entertaining. Rated: 2/5 Nov 18, 2024 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Common Sense Media Far more interested in shooting and fights than it is in characters or ideas, this generic action thriller can't even get that much right, with its choppy, incoherent look and sluggish pacing. Rated: 2/5 Sep 2, 2024 Full Review Allison Rose FlickDirect Gunner is the type of movie that lacks imagination as the plot is recycled, the music is off the mark and many of the performances are simply mediocre. Rated: 2/5 Aug 21, 2024 Full Review Matt Donato Collider Dig real deep, and you might unearth a redeeming quality in Gunner — but it's not worth the effort. Fifty T Hemsworth's Gym Bod Can't Save This Scriptwreck: I rocked up to Gunner fancying a no-brains B-movie bash - grizzled vet versus biker scum, what's not to love? First 40 minutes deliver the goods: tense family awkwardness in the woods, a bang that kicks off proper mayhem, and Hemsworth cracking skulls like he means it. Could've trimmed a tad for extra zip, mind. Then... poof. Next half-hour torpedoes the lot - characters turn into cardboard cutouts, stakes evaporate, and you're left wondering why you give a toss about anyone left standing. Poor Morgan Freeman? Glorified cameo as a wise-cracking jailbird kingpin; the man's a national treasure, yet here he's phoning it in from the set of his sofa. Hemsworth looks like he's auditioning for a protein ad, not Delta Force. Action's all flash, no bang - fights fizzle, script's a snooze. Loads of promise pissed away. 4.5/10; stick to the trailer, chaps. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/30/25 Full Review Rian B I saw that Morgan Freeman was in it at that was probably the only good thing around the movie, the plot was good but not executed properly. The music was off the mark and the details of the film were neglected. It could have been far better Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/25 Full Review Leigh C Really DREADFUL film with many, many obviously fake 5* reviews written in concentrated batches of 20-30, eg Oct 12 2024 and Oct 18 2024, saying things like "I don't really like action films but .. this movie .. made me want to watch all of Dimitri's films". Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/25 Full Review Julian B This is such an awful film, I gave up and switched it off. Rotten Tomatoes is fixed, no way its worth 62% Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/26/25 Full Review patrick m I'm not as poetic as the 'critics ' in my review but it's a BAD film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/19/25 Full Review Brian D I was genuinely surprised to see Gunner rated above 50%. While I enjoy a good revenge or rescue story where the villain targets the wrong family, this film doesn’t live up to the genre’s potential. It should be sitting firmly in the “rotten” category, because despite moments of excitement, the overall execution is deeply disappointing. The biggest culprits are the script and direction. The writing is riddled with forced plot devices and weak character development. The protagonist, Lee Gunner, fits the mold of a tough, stoic hero, but instead of making him compelling, the story leans on a hollow secret about his military past. His estranged relationship with his son feels contrived, and when the truth finally surfaces, there’s no logical reason he would have kept it hidden from his family other than to serve the writer’s agenda. Action sequences, while plentiful, are undercut by unrealistic staging. Gunner is portrayed as an expert marksman, yet whenever he’s cornered, enemies suddenly act like police officers, demanding he drop his weapon instead of simply shooting him, even after he’s gunned down dozens of their comrades. One especially ridiculous fight drags on as his foes watch passively, allowing him to turn the tables again and again. Budget limitations are also glaring. The skydiving scenes look especially fake, undermining any sense of danger or immersion. And the idea that Gunner could summon a military-grade plane at a moment’s notice, ready to drop him into action, is laughably unrealistic. These shortcuts make the film feel cheap rather than thrilling. Ultimately, Gunner squanders what could have been a solid rescue-revenge story. With sharper writing, more grounded direction, and a budget that matched its ambition, this could have been memorable. Instead, it feels like a sloppy imitation of far better action films.
