Wesley Morris Boston Globe This Japanese horror movie is weirder than anything life could offer. Rated: 3/4 Jul 18, 2008 Full Review Joshua Rothkopf Time Out No amount of absurdity -- and this film delivers plenty -- can clip the essential enjoyments of Sion Sono's hair-horror flick, about haunted extensions that strangle their style-obsessed victims to death. Jonathan G Exte is a slick J-Horror from the early 2000 about killer hair extension by Sion Sono. The marketing material says so, and its pretty accurate. Chiaki Kuriyama plays protagonist Yoku. A beacon of hope in a small town by the sea inhabited by obnoxious people. She gleefully guides us through on her quest to become a hair stylist. The heart of the story is Miku Sato as Mami. An abused child dense with sympathy trying to hold everything together. She has really nice hair. Portrayed magnificently by Ren Osugi is Yamazaki the antagonist; flirting with the limit of weirdness and creepiness yet always entertaining. He's an extreme tricophile. The rapid pacing and the inspired visuals make this a fun and easy watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Audience Member Being very westernised and not entirely written by Sion Sono, the film lacks identity. Putting Miss Kuriyama for the main role shows an attempt to marketting in the US and its lackluster special effects and cartoon sound effects altogether make the film look corny, even thought the body horror may impress the casual filmgoer. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member An unlikely but winning mix of (actual) creepy Japanese horror and domestic drama--Vigorously barmy and entertaining J-horror comedy!! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Where Hollywood can take a BRILLIANTLY scary story, and turn it into the biggest piece of $#!%, The Japanese take an absolutely ridiculous idea, and turn it into a creepy, disturbing, and all out bizarre horror film. This belongs in the asian-horror classics. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Not creepy or scary.... Just really wierd. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Il clichè dei capelli neri portato all'estremo. Anzi, all'ekusutremo. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
