Audience Member Stunning visuals. Interesting camera work. Love the pacing and decision on how the director wanted to tell the story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member intricate and stunning Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/21 Full Review Audience Member Imagine taking a video camera and walking around your county for a couple of months, filming totally random interactions between people. Then randomly selecting clips of those interactions and piecing together a movie. No story. No narration. So uninspired that a 12 year old with a video camera could do it. This is not a work of art like so many critics claim it is but rather virtue signaling on their part. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Speaking as a documentary filmmaker and editor, this is one of the most poignant and beautifully constructed documentary essays I've seen. It moves viscerally through time and space and creates such vibrant emotional chords that it made me gasp. How anyone can give this film a one star is bizarre to me. This film is a rare combination of poetry and subtle–but no less insightful–social commentary that doesn't hand you political 'answers' on a plate. It gives you room to breathe, to think, to witness, intimately, which is extremely hard to pull off both in terms of getting access to film, and putting it together in the edit room, let me tell you. If I could give it ten stars, I would. Ignore the one stars, do yourself a favor, and give this film the time and attention it deserves. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Well shot, but lacks direction or context Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/30/20 Full Review dave d When you view over 200 new movies a year and a 76 minute documentary that comes highly recommended comes along, you crack your knuckles and can't wait to watch. I was a little late to the party on this Academy Award nominated doc, and sometimes it's better to be never than late. Recently one of the youngins did a tracking shot for about five minutes on a long drive. So when you see something similar in a film that was nominated for an award, it kinda makes ya think. I just didn't get into this. RaMell Ross lets the camera hold on certain subjects for three minutes and the movie stalls until a fairly major event happens that reenergized the movie and engaged me. The momentum carried me to the finish, but I was bored way too often and the short run time includes five minutes of credit so it's possible Ross did as well. We're left in the dark about a lot of things and considering the viewer is supposed to have a connection with the people on the screen it didn't come through why we should be rooting for them or if we should be. Ross could have guided the viewer along a bit more. He did have a graphic here and there to explain a situation, but confusion did not lead to interest. I just didn't like this and can't tell anyone that I'm positive the director isn't trolling us. Maybe the Academy is too! Ben Sachs Chicago Reader RaMell Ross's remarkable debut feature is as much an experimental film as it is a documentary, and it succeeds smashingly on both fronts. Mar 25, 2020 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer At the same time that Hale County's collage style helps the film avoid becoming a Southern variation on Hoop Dreams, it refuses to lapse into anything resembling hand-wringing melancholy. Feb 21, 2019 Full Review Rafer Guzman Newsday A visually mesmerizing but only half-illuminating documentary on black lives in the Deep South. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 12, 2019 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine I respect Ross’s ambition and general project more than a brainwave readout of moment-to-moment reactions would indicate. Jan 6, 2023 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter Hale County illustrates the sad truth of just how much of America, especially but not only the rural South, is still almost entirely segregated. Jun 1, 2020 Full Review Steven Sheehan The Digital Fix An intriguing and artistically-styled documentary that is mostly deserving of the critical praise.
