Some of the film's most disarming moments involve Cohen's early years, as he initially struggles with the transition from poet to folk musician, then again as his U.S. label refuses to release the original version of the titular song.

The problem here is that Hallelujah, despite a rather unwieldly two hour runtime, spends far too long on things of little importance whenever it threatens to really dig into some of the thornier issues that the song and its commercialized success raise.

Intriguing: a full-length documentary not just about a great artist, but about one creation by that artist. The creation is (obviously) Hallelujah, the haunting Cohen liturgy prayer hymn now embedded in memories worldwide. The filmmakers visit everyone involved in every way with the poet/singer and the evolution of the song, a score of singers, producers, journalists. At the end, we are left with (or focused on) the mystery of What is Art? Not a bad place to be, but somehow the watcher hopes for just a little more.
