Linda Marric The Jewish Chronicle While there isn’t much here that fans won’t know, the film still makes for a riveting watch. As for those who are less familiar with the song or its original writer, this might prove to be a genuine eye-opener. Rated: 4/5 Sep 20, 2022 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) ... A layered portrait of Cohen’s life (from poet to rock star to monk to comeback king) while always returning to the song that defined him. Rated: 4/5 Sep 16, 2022 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News ... An engrossing portrait of an artist through the lens of his most famous and enduring work. Rated: B+ Aug 5, 2022 Full Review Amber Wilkinson Eye for Film The end result could do with less tangent and more of the gent himself. Rated: 3/5 Apr 3, 2023 Full Review Alistair Lawrence Common Sense Media Some of the film's most disarming moments involve Cohen's early years, as he initially struggles with the transition from poet to folk musician, then again as his U.S. label refuses to release the original version of the titular song. Rated: 3/5 Mar 15, 2023 Full Review Glenn Dunks The Film Experience The problem here is that Hallelujah, despite a rather unwieldly two hour runtime, spends far too long on things of little importance whenever it threatens to really dig into some of the thornier issues that the song and its commercialized success raise. Eric Intriguing: a full-length documentary not just about a great artist, but about one creation by that artist. The creation is (obviously) Hallelujah, the haunting Cohen liturgy prayer hymn now embedded in memories worldwide. The filmmakers visit everyone involved in every way with the poet/singer and the evolution of the song, a score of singers, producers, journalists. At the end, we are left with (or focused on) the mystery of What is Art? Not a bad place to be, but somehow the watcher hopes for just a little more. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/22 Full Review Hankster Great documentary with a lot of film at many different periods of his life. Well cut and edited. Very informative. Learned new aspects of Leonard Cohen, i.e. who he was as a person, his beliefs. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/15/22 Full Review John K Great biography. Great music!
