Critics Consensus

Halloween: H2O is the best of the many sequels, yet still pales in comparison to the original Halloween.

Aja Romano Vox H20 is far more character-driven than any of its predecessors. Oct 19, 2018 Full Review Derek Adams Time Out While Carpenter's film was all about economy and a skilful use of empty space, Miner's busy compositions have a cluttered feel that is echoed by superfluous orchestral music. Aug 16, 2007 Full Review Paul Tatara CNN.com I'm currently stuck watching the revival of a movie form that appalled me the first time around, then disappeared from view after a torrent of thoughtless re-workings that resembled bloody tape loops. She goes from a hysterical babysitter who can’t wait to return to normal life to a grown woman who knows that normal does not exist and accepts the monster within. Jun 10, 2024 Full Review Kat Halstead Common Sense Media It's a decent entry into the franchise, with solid performances and kills, but little in the way of additional flair. Daniel C. M A very underrated sequel. Delightifully short; nice and sweet thrills and kills. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Rowan C I really liked the concept of this movie and how we all go to see Jamie Lee Curtis returning as her star role Laurie Strode. Screw the other movies, Laurie now has a son named Jhon and she is worried that Michael will try to target him. Michaels mask was a little stupid again, and the beginning of the movie was slow but it really picked up in the end. LL Cool J actually did a really good job and he was super funny. The kills were mediocre and I truly think that this movie is worth watching if you like Halloween. Overall, a redeeming movie and everyone that loves the Halloween franchise, loves Laurie Strode. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Byron H 2/4 I saw H20 Opening Night in 1998. The ending got a reaction similar to your favorite sports team winning a title with no time left or a walk off home run to win the world series. The film was ok, but that theatrical experience at the end was unlike any other. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/24 Full Review mark g Because this movie followed a string of terrible sequels and had a budget and Jamie Lee Curtis back, people tend to let it slide. But make no mistake. This movie was terrible. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Birithivy Y Halloween H20: 20 Years Later - 7.5/10. The 90s saw a massive revival of slasher movies with the huge success of Scream. So when Kevin Williamson, the writer for Scream, brought forth an idea of reimagining a direct sequel to the original Halloween, it was bound to happen. And surprisingly, it became by far the best sequel in the long list of Halloween films featuring the famed Michael Myers. Steve Miner, who was famous for his work on the Friday The 13th series, was brought on to direct, with the now huge star Jamie Lee Curtis returning in her iconic Laurie Strode character. And it was an interesting route they took in this film. It realistically touched upon the trauma that Laura has gone through since her initial encounter, and the film does an excellent job of slowly ramping up the proceedings towards the inevitable “final” showdown. This movie has always been a favourite of mine, and was always played on sundays during Fox tv’s afternoon movie programming. Also, I love the atmosphere in this film. The fall setting suits this film so well, and it adds so much with the way the story unfolds. Though I now prefer the David Gordon Green Halloween reimagined sequels, H20 is still a fairly solid and entertaining film. It has a lot of great talent working in it (young stars on the rise Josh Harnett, Michelle Williams, and Joseph Gordon Levitt all appeared in the film) and it features a really sweet homage to Psycho, featuring Curtis’s actual real mother Janet Leigh. As for one of the main reasons why this movie is super underrated is because of the film that followed. Halloween Ressurection ruined the franchise and destroyed the impactful and poetic ending H20 had. Its really rare a horror movie has a complete ending (ironically the Scream series is the only other horror franchise that ends their movies with definitive endings). To see Laurie finally kill Michael meant something, and to erase that in another sequel ruined this movie’s standing. In retrospect, this movie has gotten its due now, and with the way the new trilogy is shaping up, it looks like we might be finally headed for a conclusive ending to the Myers saga. A definite classic in the horror genre, and a movie that is severely underrated in the entertainment quota. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review JACK B H20 competes for the best sequel of the franchise. Jamie Lee Curtis brings a lot to the character of Laurie Strode and develops the relationship between herself and her son in a very grounded way, while also cementing her as a scream queen in the final act. The other characters are entertaining to be around and the 90s Scream aesthetic brings a lot of fun to this movie. Myers is a bit of letdown, but is servicable enough to make the film, and especially the awesome third act, work great. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Read all reviews
