Audience Member This film has a lot of problems with continuity and editing. It had a chance to be a great movie, until it was butchered in the cutting room. It is very distracting, and you spend a lot of time trying to figure out what was changed and cut. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Overall, it just feels incomplete and butchered, as if a longer and better film was sacrificed for a shorter runtime. Even though the film was directed by the great Wim Wenders I doubt he had the final cut or, in many cases, final say. It's visionless, empty, and more interested with shoving in cameos and stars than telling a story or even making a slight attempt to understand his psyche. Only worth seeing for Jack Nance and some moments where Wenders' direction shines through a ruined picture. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member This film was produced at Zoetrope Studios in Hollywood under the direction of Francis Ford Capolla and Wim Wenders. A lot of the mood and atmospherics ended up on the cutting room floor. I had a scene with a bunch of pool players in Chinatown that disappeared. In France it became a huge hit! It went under the radar in the US. Good cast in the pulp noire genre. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting that director Wim Wenders waited until several after the neo-noir trend to make 'Hammett.' That helps to explain why it isn't better well known. Nevertheless, it's quite good. Not as overtly atmospheric (nor as grim) as 'Chinatown' or 'The Long Goodbye," yet it nails noir's love of multiple meanings, shadowy intrigue and labyrinthine storylines. Here's the interesting thing: fellow fans of John Carpenter's 'Big Trouble In Little China' will surely recognize the basic premise: Chinese immigrant sold into the sex slave trade by shadowy power players. Another parallel is Wenders' use of maze-like sets to depict the mysterious world of San Francisco's Chinatown; Carpenter did the same thing four years (albeit with supernatural overtones). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the best pulp homages I've seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic set pieces in this unusual neo-noir. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
