The worst attempt of Kore-eda's career. He stages his first, and only, "jidaigeki" (時代劇), "period drama": a choral film that never takes off, limiting itself to a glossy representation of a kind-hearted but boring Edo tale, anchored to the canons of television fiction. The typical delicacy of Kore-eda's aesthetics is there, but the substance and the emotional involvement is lacking.

A more emotional take on the Samurai genre. The understanding of Sozemon's struggles with revenge were not lost - but much of this movies rambling tangents were a little much. But Kore-eda is an amazing director of actors and every performance out of this extensive cast is spot on -

Could be a bit more polished, but Hana is a dissacrant albeit quiet twist on chambara tropes, stabbing at the heart the 47 Ronin of fame: better live poorly, but well than die with honor. Slice of life wins over slashes of katana.

Junichi Okada! There are some satiric, humoreous moments perhaps only native Japanese could fully understand however. The standard overlong & overslow narrative of Japanese movies just turns me off one more time.
