Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader A beautiful movie. Aug 12, 2021 Full Review Gene Seymour Newsday Vasquez' open-hearted view toward his characters redeems even the hoariest clichés of this otherwise engaging and admirable addition to the guys-night-out sub-genre. Rated: 3/4 Aug 12, 2021 Full Review Bill Cosford Miami Herald It's all a little too pat, which is the danger in such carefully symmetric ensemble pieces But Hangin' With the Homeboys was nicely made and the script has its moments (many of them ripely vulgar). Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 12, 2021 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) A film that gives a lot of laughs, and a lot to think about. [Full review in Spanish] Dec 12, 2022 Full Review Andrew S.Vargas Remezcla Vásquez brought us an uncharacteristic vision of inner city life where black and brown stand side-by-side despite underlying racial tensions. Aug 12, 2021 Full Review Eleanor O'Sullivan Asbury Park Press (NJ) What's fresh and almost daring is that Vasquez gives each character a strong identity -- no cookie-cutter molds here -- as well as being generous with good lines and big moments for each man. Audience Member Tom, Johnnie, Willie, and Fernando are four friends looking for some action on the streets. They venture from the Bronx to Manhattan. It's all an embarrassing situation from one to the next. All their friendships could seriously get tested along the way. I just thought this was alright; but it does show how four friends can be entirely different from one another. Some good allegory about the hardships of life and making certain choices. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Coming of age film that will likely interest those of us who saw the 80s most. Some classic scenes and lines which a friend and I recreate every once in a while, to a good laugh..."ferrrrnando quevas!" Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Another lost gem in Black Renaissance era. Four guys, two black and two Latino characters finds themselves in a night of partying that by the end, helps them understand each other and themselves. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member How many life experiences can you have in one night? Too damn many hanging with these cats. I truly enjoy watching it from time to time. Makes me appreciate the people who are in my life. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member great movie. reminds me of being young and my father. every man has friends like these. at least I do. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Such a funny, dramatic, and realistic independent film from the 90's.The characters feel human and they are all interesting.John Leguizamo is great here. But Doug E.Doug was the standout as Willy giving the character a teenage-like innocence and attitude about him.And when it came to either the dramtic and comedic moments with that character it worked really well.It even earned him an Independent Spirit Award Nomination(They are so better than the Oscars).I wish there were more films like Hangin' with the Homeboys.
