Scott Marks San Diego Reader The gore gets to be a tad gratuitous, but for the most part [Duane] Journey has a ball ripping into genre conventions. Rated: 2/5 Apr 30, 2020 Full Review Scott Hallam Dread Central Hansel & Gretel Get Baked is horror meets stoner comedy in a humorous blend of action and gore that will get a tickle out of even the orneriest of witches. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 30, 2020 Full Review Luke Owen Flickering Myth Hansel & Gretel Get Baked is still a really dull, by the numbers unfunny comedy. It fails at almost everything it tries to do and it just feels like a giant waste of time. Rated: 1/5 Apr 30, 2020 Full Review Shaun Munro What Culture Coasts on a brilliant performance from Lara Flynn Boyle, even if it's strictly for fans of the stoner movie formula. Rated: 3/5 Aug 28, 2013 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com That a movie with this title and these recreational interests can remain compelling at all is a minor miracle, proving that a few drops of creativity and enthusiasm make all the difference in the world. Rated: B- Feb 28, 2013 Full Review Matt Donato We Got This Covered For as half-baked as this Hansel and Gretel story is, there are some wickedly entertaining moments that produce an inconsistant yet intoxicating high. TheMovieSearch R Hansel & Gretel Get Baked is exactly what the title promises: a stoner horror-comedy that mashes classic fairy tale elements with weed-fueled antics. The film follows Gretel, a pothead on a quest to find her missing boyfriend—unaware that he’s already been murdered by a witch who grows her own magical cannabis. Her brother Hansel joins the hunt, and together they navigate a world where drug dealers, locals, and hapless victims vanish into the witch’s enchanted weed fields. The concept is audacious and could have been entertaining—but execution is where it all falls apart. The direction feels flat and uninspired, lacking tension or a coherent vision. Scenes that could have been suspenseful or darkly humorous instead drag, as the camera lingers on uninteresting details while the story meanders. The screenplay is sporadic and scattershot, seemingly cobbled together without much thought for pacing or narrative flow. Characters pop in and out with little motivation, and dialogue is painfully forced, full of clichés and stoner stereotypes that rarely land. Acting is another weak spot. The leads, while trying to embrace the absurdity, deliver performances that feel half-hearted, as if even they know the script is beyond saving. Even moments that could have been genuinely creepy—like the witch rejuvenating by draining victims’ life energy or her demonic dog enforcer—are undermined by over-the-top absurdity. And yes, there are sequences where magical weed plants attack people. It’s as ridiculous as it sounds, and not in a way that’s enjoyable. The pacing of Hansel & Gretel Get Baked is its own punishment. The plot takes forever to gain traction, leaving viewers trapped in a loop of exposition, pointless stoner gags, and repetitive confrontations with the witch. The climax, which could have delivered some much-needed payoff, instead collapses under its own chaotic ideas. What could have been campy fun feels sloppy and exhausting. While there are occasional sparks of creativity, they are few and far between. A few practical effects and inventive magical ideas hint at potential, but the film never capitalizes on them. Instead, it becomes a confusing jumble of poorly executed concepts that fail to engage or entertain. In short, Hansel & Gretel Get Baked is a cautionary tale in its own right: a movie with a fun premise and ridiculous promise, but one that completely fails to deliver. Unless you’re looking for a background movie to glance at while laughing at the absurdity of it all, this one is best skipped entirely. Even for stoner-comedy fans, the film is a tough sell.
