Stanley Kauffmann The New Republic Sewitsky is a bit too fond of the handheld camera, but she is immediate, close. Her first picture, daring title and all, takes an empathic look at a permanent puzzle. Jun 19, 2013 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard The whole is thought-provoking and funny. Rated: 3/5 Nov 16, 2012 Full Review Rebecca Ellis Little White Lies Darkly comic and surprisingly touching in equal measure. Rated: 4/5 Nov 15, 2012 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com One cannot rave enough about the amazing performance of Agnes Kittelsen, whose always present smile and indefatigable will to be happy is both a survival mechanism for her character and the driving force of the film. Rated: 4/5 Jun 27, 2019 Full Review Ben Nicholson CineVue Happy, Happy remains an engaging piece which has good performances from all its leads and is solidly directed by the débutante. Rated: 3/5 Feb 5, 2019 Full Review Siobhan Synnot Scotsman Good-natured Norwegian culture-clash comedy between city folks and their new small-town neighbours. Audience Member Be yourself who cared Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Enjoyable premise and quirky film, but somehow very ordinary. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A very good choice for the fans of Scandinavian cinema - light, funny, yet touching quite a dramatic topic and area. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting, unique. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty good indie film! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Family is the most important thing in the world to Kaja (Agnes Kittelsen). She is an eternal optimist in spite of living with a man who would rather go hunting with the boys and isn't interested in having sex with her anymore because she "isn't particularly attractive." Whatever. That's life. But when "the perfect couple", Sigve (Henrik Rafaelsen) and Elisabeth (Maibritt Saerens), moves in next door, Kaja struggles to keep her emotions in check. Not only do these successful, beautiful, exciting people sing in a choir, they have also adopted a child - from Ethiopia! These new neighbours open a whole new world to Kaja, with consequences for everyone involved. And when Christmas comes around, it becomes evident that nothing will ever be like before - even if Kaja tries her very best... I wanted to see "Happy, Happy" because of Agnes Kittelsen whom I have seen in the norwegian tv-show DAG. The problem with "Happy, Happy" is that the build up to the main plot takes a bit too long, Kaja isn´t that loveable unfortunately and the movie struggles with a confused identity if it´s a comedy, a drama or both. The musical interludes performed by a quartet builds on the confused identity as well. I reckon they aimed for comedy quirkiness á la Zooey Deschanel, but ended up with something vague, slightly depressing and not that funny. But, I still like Agnes Kittelsen.
