85% 20 Reviews Tomatometer 95% Fewer than 50 Verified Ratings Audience Score Hard Miles tells the uplifting true story of the bicycling team at Rite of Passage's RidgeView Academy, a medium-security correctional school in Colorado. The film follows beleaguered coach Greg Townsend (Matthew Modine) as he rounds up an unlikely crew of incarcerated students for a seemingly impossible bike ride from Denver to the Grand Canyon. As the beginner bicyclists battle heatstroke, speed wobbles, and the greatest enemy of all cyclists -- a chafed crotch -- they must learn to stop fighting and ride together as a peloton. The bicycle serves not just as a means of transportation, but as a test; a way for each of these young men to see what they are truly capable of, physically, mentally, and emotionally. As caring social worker Haddie (Cynthia Kaye McWilliams) attempts to be the voice of reason, coach Greg Townsend pushes the boys to their limit, and cracks begin to form in the peloton. Ultimately, Greg's words will ring hollow unless he can apply his coaching advice to his own life and make amends with his dying father. In the sweltering desert, the boys reach a crossroads and must decide whether to continue down the path of least resistance, or take agency of their futures and pave the way to forgiveness. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/24 Full Review Rodney G Its an excellent movie with a very emotional story line. This movie is underrated. Why only 1 showing per day and why arent any other theaters in this area showing it? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/29/24 Full Review Jackie This movie was really good. Tugged at your heartstrings. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/24 Full Review Connor P First of heart. The cinematography perfectly captures the awe and beauty of that region leading to the Grand Canyon. And finally, cycling. Too few movies include cycling despite it being the perfect medium to show struggle and perseverance! Beautifully done! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/24 Full Review Judy Movie was excellent, even made some cry a tear or two. I brought a deaf gentleman with me and the closed caption option worked very well for him, If fact he asked when could we go again. Thank you for making this such a positive experience for him and for the whole group. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review Michelle We really liked this movie! Nell Minow RogerEbert.com [T]he film is a combination of spectacular scenery, arduous exertion, inspiring pep talks, adolescent rebellion, emotional confrontations, and lessons learned by both the teenagers and their leader. Rated: 3/4 Apr 19, 2024 Full Review Thelma Adams AARP Movies for Grownups An inspiring movie that pushes away the soot and trauma of our overtaxed corrections system to find the inherent good in its young denizens, one pedal, one hard mile, at a time. Rated: 4/5 Apr 19, 2024 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety This fact-inspired tale covers familiar redemptive sports drama terrain. But it’s traveled with affectingly understated assurance by director R.J. Daniel Hanna (“Miss Virginia”) and a strong cast, making for a satisfying scenic ride.
