Critics Consensus

Its lurid violence may put off some viewers, but Harry Brown is a vigilante thriller that carries an emotional as well as a physical punch, thanks to a gripping performance from Michael Caine in the title role.

Harry Brown might just about have got by as a tongue-in-cheek popcorn romp, but by setting itself up as a virtual state-of-the-nation address it only draws attention to its own petty, embittered vacuity. Go to Full Review

A lot to digest stylistically and narratively, but Harry Brown is developed in an ever-increasing, shock-inducing manner and is undeniably successful. Go to Full Review

Caine, that master of gentle sadness, lets us know Harry immediately as a good man trying to get by -- and trying to understand what seems like madness. Go to Full Review

Billed by some as a spiritual sequel to the classic 1970s crime drama Get Carter, this British vigilante thriller also casts Caine as a ruthless hard man, albeit one in advancing years. Go to Full Review

Harry Brown is, for the most part, one of the most original, stylistically-assured films to come out this year, and is a deeply impressive, distinctive showcase for its newcomer director, and canonised star. Go to Full Review

Noel L Oct 26 This is a combination of the Death Wish movies in the UK See more Madam D Sep 4 Michael Caine did some good acting, but the issue of gang crime is not really addressed. Is an eye for an eye the only answer? See more Ian R Aug 22 This is an emotionally manipulative film that both exaggerates and over simplifies a complex social problem in the United Kingdom. Fans of Michael Caine might be able to overlook the ridiculousness of such an elderly man being a vigilante. Without him the movie would have gone unnoticed amongst the many other films with a similar premise. Glad I didn't pay to see it. See more thiago s @Thiagostone Jul 12 Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom See more C B Jun 16 The plot follows a predictable vigilante formula without any big surprises. But it receives 3 and 1/2 stars because of the excellent acting, and the unusual photography; a greenish/yelllow/black palette (almost like "Batman") which somehow adds to the grittiness of the story. See more Garry A @heavyg May 16 I saw this when it was in the theaters and remembered I was underwhelmed. Watching it again I was fully engaged. Some of the best scenes were Michael Caine just using his face to communicate his anguish and exhaustion. See more Read all reviews
