Judith G We watched this last night with amazement that a film could be so bad . The film obviously had to be churned out in a hurry but an American accent and an English lord ? The storyline in the book is great , in the film it was muddled . The backcloths were bad , and the American ideas of the English countryside and villagers was condescending . We did watch it all with continuing horror . Bunter , the manservant was far too old and not subservient enough and had the box of port upside down twice in the car . Appallingly bad . Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/23 Full Review Audience Member I read that the novel this is based upon was good -- but the translation to film was poorly executed. This must be correct, because the script is atrocious. We jump from one scene to another, one character to another, never knowing what's going on, or what's supposed to go on, and there is no mystery happening until the very end ... and then it's over. Robert Montgomery looks good, but has no charm or wit, and he has no one to play off. We are supposed to believe this American-sounding man is a British lord? It's just plain ridiculous. MGM's aristocratic films are also becoming boorish and tepid. Always upper crust films, rich protagonists, high society environments, always a maid and a butler, and un-American class distinctions, these kinds of films had run their course with the public, although MGM continued to churn them out into the late 1950s on a much smaller scale. Haunted Honeymoon could have been much better. How could it have been worse? Stick to the book. Try using what already worked. MGM couldn't get out of its way fast enough and the first thing that happened was that the costumes came out -- and then the guessing game: who would wear them and why? This is a picture that should never have been made. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
