Audience Member Director Herb Freed (Beyond Evil, Tomboy, Graduation Day) wrote this movie with his wife Anne Marisse. They were inspired by the repressed memories he experienced after she saw a car accident. It starts May Britt, who had stopped acting when she married Sammy Davis, Jr. After their divorce in 1968, she struggled to work her way back into acting. She plays Ingrid Svensen, a Swedish farm girl — Britt was 42 when this was made — living with her uncle Carl (Cameron Mitchell) and trying to get past the memories of being molested by her father and the suicide of her mother. There's also a masked killer stalking the small Northern California town she lives in, using scissors to mutilate its victims. Even worse, the town butcher continually assaults her, bringing back the horrific memories of her past abuse. Yet this is not a straight giallo. It might even be an F-giallo. It's definitely one strange film, one with no easy answers and even Mitchell said that it was "very strange" and he had no idea of the director's vision. By the end, we're left wondering if any interaction that Ingrid had was ever real. In fact, was she ever real? I should mention right now that Aldo Ray is in this. I know some people that would be upset if I didn't. You should read Bill's review. How this hasn't been released by a boutique label kind of freaks me out. It's a slice of weirdness, one that completely has the bottom fall out by the end, then find itself with a haunting closing scene, filled with steam and entropy. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Haunts was actually a pretty good movie up until the killer's identity was revealed then the movie was here, there & everywhere (It was all over the place) It should've been ended right after.Adding more after just spoiled it.I guess it also didn't help that after I found out who the killer was I truly lost interest.Maybe if it was done in a better way it could've worked out, Maybe if the killer wasn't revealed that soon the last bit wouldn't have felt like extra stuff added on just to add time to the movie, Hmmm..... Maybe Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A dangerous offender stalking women in a rural town has police baffled. Several red herrings are brought forward in what looks like a standard film plot before an interesting twist at the end due to a confused local woman who apparently suffers from hallucinations. Represents some of the best plot material Cameron Mitchell had to work with later in his career. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Decent, but slow and rather hard to follow. Some nice twists, so-so characters, and a bit of appeal. But it does end up dragging. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Mill Creek's 50 Movie Pack: Chilling Classics Reviews HAUNTS / THE VEIL [1977]: Despite what the title might suggest (another ghost movie), HAUNTS from 1977 is a solid psychological horror film graced by the presence by Cameron Mitchell. Set in a small rural US town (which worked out well for the financial restrictions for the film's production) a young, religious woman called Ingrid starting for her safety with a serial Rapist & killer stalking several of the towns' women. When she is attacked in her backyard, bad things start to happen to her. THOUGHTS: For a low budget 1970's horror film, it's an alright film. A good twist here and there makes this film enjoyable. Decent performances make the film tick along, however it sadly isn't very memorable. 60% Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This is another movie from The Mill Creek Chiller Movies 50 Pack. No real big stars in this one. May Britt plays in her next to last movie. A definite B-Movie heading towards the C Bracket real fast. One of those whose the killer movies where just about everyone is a suspect. A little bit of a twist at the end, that should be guessed about 30 minutes into the movie. The movie drags and drags on, lots of places where the credits should roll but don't. I can only give this one 2 stars. You have to really be at the edge to watch this one.
