Critics Consensus

Head Count doesn't rack up enough punchy scares to be an unqualified success as a horror outing, but an engaging cast and textured characters make it a refreshing genre exercise with something on its mind.

Justin Lowe Hollywood Reporter Favoring psychological chills over blood-soaked mayhem, Callahan's impressively crafted debut nods to recent horror classics while displaying an eminently distinctive vision of its own. Jun 15, 2019 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times Once the Hisje begins working its way through these kids - needing to take five souls before it can be satisfied - "Head Count" becomes a solidly made, often quite scary horror picture. Jun 14, 2019 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety It's an admirably disciplined film with committed performances by actors playing characters more complicated than the usual horror casualty list. Jun 12, 2019 Full Review Dolores Quintana Dolores Quintana HEAD COUNT is a really good and genuinely scary horror film that is light on gore, but not light on thrills. An existential slasher killer stalking a crew of friends with the new guy unleashing horror on them all Dec 28, 2022 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts A unique and dynamic psychological horror movie... I am excited to see what's next from [writer and director Elle Callahan]. Rated: 7/10 Oct 27, 2020 Full Review Ryan Larson Ghastly Grinning All that said, Head Count is an impressive debut. Elle Callahan has crafted a minimalist, modern age ghost story that should be told in hushed whispers around the campfire. Jun 24, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Samuel B Honestly disgusted by the negative ratings. It’s a solid film. Solid acting and could be reinvented as a mesh with John Carpenters The Thing…which…hello…is amazing. Jump scares are great. Atmospheric tension. Has you looking at every inch of the scene constantly. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/09/24 Full Review Walter W If it wasn't for the Manos: The Hands of Fate Easter egg, I would have rated this lower. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Cronis Direction, and writing, to forget Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/24 Full Review Brad P Head Count brings a good-time horror heatwave that keeps viewers guessing, but the name of this game is always doom and damnation. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/23 Full Review Hugo Horror movie targeted to a younger audience (the abusive use of drugs, alcohol and the F* word prevails). We have all seen this plot before: a group of teens is haunted by a supernatural creature (shape shifter) in the Californian desert. Next! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/21/22 Full Review prawnda s pretty solid movie. low to medium budget, but high quality. the monster reveal would be best left out of the film, but otherwise it's significantly better than what most of the reviews are saying. everyone in it is good enough at acting that the realism wasn't broken, and the ending was pretty nice.
