Steven D. Greydanus Decent Films As with Huston's The African Queen, there is conflict mixed with romantic tension… Here, though, the complicating factor is not fastidiousness, but vocation. Blu B A War Drama Classic that is really well made all around. The setting is beautiful, the two leads have great chemistry, and it's a very unique sort of hybrid with very little actual war in it. The film goes between hiding from the enemy and developing the relationships pretty effortlessly. I find is so interesting paraells of being a soldier in the marines and the church belonging to something bigger than yourself and yet how they hold you back as well for the two characters. My one complaint is despite having lots of substance, great direction, and characters, it's very slow and can prod along throughout. The tension can kind of fizzle out when Mitchum is infiltrating the enemy bunks because it feels like it just lingers a bit too long and holds on shots for too long. It needed a bit more franticness to it and a sense of urgency. At the same time there is almost a dreamlike quality to the whole thing too at times during the times the Japanese aren't there. It's also impressive some of the cool underwater shots, handheld shots, and the 8 minute opening with no dialouge. This is a very quiet film half the time and really has a understanding of what a motion picture is. You could easily turn the sound off and follow this completely. Anyone who is a fan of dramas, war films, the director, or the two leads should check this out. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Franky L This is an interesting WWII movie, featuring a US Marine and Irish Nun who find themselves alone, together, after being separated from their units-church. Only two actors carry this movie, and Robert Mitchum is superb and believable as a kind hearted yet tough Marine. Definitely a must watch for classic movie watchers. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/24 Full Review Frances H Wonderful performances by Kerr and Mitchem add to a very interesting story and great direction by ;defend John Huston. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/24 Full Review Pat M Charming, straightforward, honest performances from two people who genuinely liked and respected each other. Possibly true story told simply but unexpectedly holds your attention and affection from the start Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/24 Full Review Mike F Very well done WWII drama with some humor and romance all while stranded on an island being bombarded all around. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/23 Full Review Russ G I don't think Miss Kerr ever turned in a bad performance and she didn't disappoint here, either. Mitchum is surprisingly good as the hard-boiled Marine. I just checked his biography and it's actually shocking that he never won an Oscar; this role among several others deserved it. Spoiler Alert: there's a "taboo" romance subplot that might have been a shocker to Catholic audiences of the time; though it isn't consumated we could easily forgive the two protagonists if it had been. I saw this on TV some time in the 1960's; it seems to be a forgotten film that seldom or never surfaces even on TCM, etc. That's a pity. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/30/22 Full Review Read all reviews
