Mike (Robert Cummings) is an accountant who also happens to be an angel working in heaven. He discovers a clerical error suggesting that Duke Byron (Brian Donlevy), an amoral Montana saloon keeper, was born without a soul. Mike journeys to the mortal world to try to reform Duke, which would give him a soul retroactively. He must also get Duke to turn his amorous attentions away from the usual floozies and toward his destined love, the virtuous schoolteacher Drusilla Wainwright (Jorja Curtright).
